Walt Gislason chosen as a Hall of Famer
The Willmar Cardinal Pride committee this week announced they’ve elected three new members to the Willmar Hall of Fame. One of them is Minneota native Walt Gislason. Gislason was a student athlete, captain, teacher, coach, veteran, volunteer booster and fan of the Willmar Cardinals.
He was founder of Walt’s Car Wash — employer and supporter of hundreds of Cardinal athletes. Gislason was also instrumental in the development of Baker Field at Bill Taunton Stadium. He served in the military in the United States Army from 1956-58 and was a member of the American Legion.
He is also known as a philanthropist, Rotary, Masonic Lodge and Shriners member, was with The Barn Theater and was a volunteer Willmar firefighter. Known simply as “Walt” — he was founder of Walt’s Car Wash, oil change and convenience store on Willmar Avenue.
He and his wife Raeanna made Willmar their home for over 40 years.
They raised two Cardinal graduates and employed many more. Walt’s Car Wash hosted many fundraisers over the years for Cardinal teams and continues to do so today.
The Minneota native graduated from Minneota in 1954. At 6-4, he was a natural for basketball and played center on the varsity team. He also was elected captain his senior year. Gislason went to Mankato State University and served three years in the U. S. Army and began his career as teacher and coach.
After earning his Master’s Degree (in speech and dramatic arts) from the University of South Dakota, he and Raeanna moved to Willmar in 1971. Among his many achievements, his role as the chief fundraiser for the improvements at Baker Field/Bill Taunton Stadium were upper-most. He personally raised more than a half million dollars.
“Without Walt, that facility would not be what it is today,” said members of the Cardinal Committee.
“Those who know Walt know he has a soft spot in his heart for those that are ‘down on their luck.’ He has quietly helped many in a way that helps them get back on their feet with a chance to live the good life,” said the committee. Walt and Raeanna recently retired to Wayzata to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
They continue to visit Willmar and Minneota often. Others elected to the Willmar Hall of Fame were George “Pinky” Nelson and Brad Welker.
The induction will be held Friday, September 20 in Willmar and the new Hall of Famers will be introduced at the Cardinal Homecoming Game against Alexandria.
