Wabasso in state Class A finals
Wabasso won the first Class A semifinal game on Saturday, defeating Ada Borup/Norman County West, 21-13.
Wabasso got Cooper Taylor loose for a 55-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter from Nick Altermatt and rode that touchdown to a 7-3 first half lead.
V. B. Alves hit a 39-yard field goal at 2:28 of the first quarter and it was 7-3 at halftime.
Late in the third quarter, Alves again struck for a 36-yard field goal to make the score 7-6, Wabasso with less than three minutes to go in the third period.
With 10:31 left in the fourth quarter, Alves made a third third field attempt but it was partially blocked and went wide. But a roughing the kicker call on Colton Taylor gave Ada-Borupl/NCW new life and Alves got another chance and again missed this one, wide left to keep Wabasso in the lead at 7-6.
Wabasso put a little icing on the cake with a fourth and five, 13-yard touchdown run from Colton Taylor with 5:58 left in the game.
Ada-Borup drove the ball to Wabasso territory but Cooper Taylor intercepted the ball to stop the drive.
On a key third dow with 2:41 left, the Rabbits appeared to have scored on a pass to Cooper Taylor. But the play was ruled in complete, Ada-Borup was assessed an interference penalty and Wabasso took the ball on the Cougars 16 yard line.
Cooper Taylor eventually scored on a six-yard run, twin brother Colton Cooper kicked the point as he’d done all day and Wabasso had a 20-6 lead with just 1:52 to go.
Brett Fetting scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from the Cougars Jared Brainard and Vitor Alves kicked the extra point to make the final scored, 21-13.
Wabasso will face the winner of the Minneota vs. Mayer Lutheran game next Saturday for the Class A Championship.
