Tate Walerius, who had doubled, slide safely into home in the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-0. He scored on a single by Sam Buysse to left field. The throw home wasn't accurate and Walerius scored.

Vultures lose out in playoffs

After losing the opener to Heron Lake-Okabena, 3-2, Minneota's Vultures Legion team ounced back to beat Wells, 15-8.

But on Saturday they lost 7-4 to Blue Earth-Winnebago and was bounced from the Sub-State playoffs.

In the win against Wells, Austin Sorensen started on the mound against Wells but was relieved by Grady Mooese, who finished the game and picked up the win

On Saturday the game was delayed several hours by rains. But Landon Rolbiecki returned from vacation in time to help a weary pitching staff.

To start the tournament they dropped a tough 3-2 game to Heron Lake-Okabena in the opener of the Sub-State Tournament.

Sam Buysse had been resting a sore arm from a lot of throwing during the high school year.

But he felt fully rested Thursday and got the opening nod in the 2019 Senior Legion Southwest Sub-State opener.

"I felt a lot better," Buysse said about his six and a third, five-hitting outing— until he tired, that is.

And all was going well. "I didn't get in much pitching this summer. My arm was sore and I  wanted it to heal," said Buysse.

In the seventh inning, after Minneota failed to score with the bases loaded and one out, Buysse suddenly tired. He gave up a one-out bunt single to Eli Fest.

"I got tired," he said. Coach Keven Larson put Teddy Pesch on the mound with Fest on third base and automatically walked the next to batters.

Pesch faced Ethan Becker and walked him on five pitches, Fest scored and the game was over, 3-2.

"We didn't take advantage of our opportunities," said Coach Larson. A nice single by Josh Laleman started the seventh and Fest walked both Thomas Hennen and Buysse. But the Heron Lake/Okabena hurler got Pesch and Austin Sorensen to pop out.

They also had a chance in the fifth. Tate Walerius doubled and scored on a single by Buysse. But they failed to get Buysse home from second. In the fifth, Sorensen was safe on an error and stole second. But Fest fanned Jaymes Moon, Cole Sanow and Grady Moorse to end the threat.

"Sam's pitching was amazing. He did exactly what we asked of him," said Larson. "We just couldn't push a run across in the last innings."

Minneota 15, Wells 6
Minneota broke open a 6-4 deficit with seven runs in the fifth inning and coasted to a 15-6 victory over Wells to stay in the Sub-State Tournament. For Wells, it was the end of the line.
Teddy Pesch, who had a mammouth game at the plate, going 4-4 with four runs scored, followed up a Sam Buysse single to keep the rally going in the fifth. He was followed by Jaymes Moon and Austin Sorensen with hits with Cole Sanow laying down a sacrifice along the way.
A double by AJ Myhre brought in a run and continued the rally, with Ben Skorczewski adding another hit before it was all over.
Minneota picked up three more runs in the sixth as Pesch again got the rally going with a double.
Skorczewski had a pair of hits and Sorensen and Jaymes Moon added two each as the Vultures banged out 13 hits.
On the mound, Sorensen didn’t survive past the first inning after Wells scored three runs. But Grady Moorse came to the mound and allowed four runs, but kept Wells off the basepaths until Minneota could get the bats rolling. He was credited with the win.

Blue Earth 7, Minneota 4
Landon Rolbiecki, who missed the first two games while on vacation, was back on the mound in this game against Blue Earth. But he gave up three first-inning runs and Minneota had to play from behind the entire game.
Down 5-1 in the third inning, Minneota rallied for three runs to pull within 5-4. But they wouldn’t get any more runs off Blue Earth pitcher Kolby Nagel.
That, and four Minneota errors led to their downfall.
Meanwhile, Blue Earth rallied for two more insurance runs in the seventh off reliever Teddy Pesch and sent Minneota home for the year.
Minneota was led at the plate by Rolbiecki and Moon with two hits each — and Rolbiecki knocked in a pair of runs. The Vultures had 11 hits against Wells.
Minneota ended the season with a 7-6 record.
