Vikings win Showdown with Lakeview
It was a big shown in many ways. Minneota Coach Hayley Fruin used to coach at Lakeview. Lakeview Coach Stephanie Hennen used to coach at Minneota. Fruin was an assistant for Hennen for one year. And she also played on a state championship team in which Stephanie Hennen was the assistant coach.
It was also a “fight cancer” night and all players on both teams joined together to raise funds and wear shirts honoring that fight.
And, oh, both teams were 6-0 in the Camden Conference.
When the dust cleared, Minneota had a 3-0 win by scores of 25-19; 25-11 and 25-15.
“They put us back on our heels right away,” said Coach Fruin.Lakeview fought back in the first game from a 6-0 deficit to tie the game at 18-18.
“We came out fire up ready to go,” said the coach. But they had to do it without one of their two setters, Ireland Stassen, who has a sprained ankle and will miss at least the rest of this week.
As a result, all the setting was squarely on the shoulders of McKenna Yost. “I think McKenna was nervous. But she stepped up and was calm. We made things simple for her. The hitters took a little time to adjust, but they did,” added the coach.
Natalee Rolbiecki stepped up and slammed home a couple of points with Morgan Hennen and Abby Frie joining her and the Vikings won the first set, 25-19.
After that it actually got a lot easier. Rolbiecki caught fire and began to put Lakeview back on their heels — and the Lakers never recovered. Rolbiecki went on to record 12 kills with Morgan Hennen nine and Abby Frie eight. Rolbiecki also had three blocks for points, Abby Hennen two and Abby Frie one.
There was a stretch in the second game when Abby Rost served eight straight points and Rolbiecki, Frie and Morgan Hennen each smashed two kills apiece during that stretch.
Morgan Hennen served five straight in the third game as the Vikings put the match into the win column for a 17-2 record.
