Vikings turn back 'inspired' Canby

Always a competitive event, the Minneota-Canby Tuesday showdown was highlighted by a gym-darkened, light-stick romp by the Lancers before the game.
Minneota student fans, not to be outdone, showed up in their “Hawaiian Homecoming attire.”
Kaley Buysse’s JV set the stage for the varsity with an emphatic 3-0 romp over the Canby Bees.
Fresh off a spectacular tournament victory in Burnsville and rise to the No. 1 state ranking, Minneota proceeded to turn back an inspired Canby squad, 3-0.
Their 19th win of the year came on 25-22; 25-15 and 25-7 triumphs.
Canby threw a scare at Minneota in the first game that featured five ties, the latest at 20-20 before Lizzy Gillingham slammed things to a conclusion at 25-22.
The second game was gift-wrapped by Lydia Sussner, who had three straight kills to open the game and eight kills as the Vikings put a little distance between them and Canby, 26-15. A nice dig by Natalee Rolbiecki turned into Gillingham’s second straight game-ending kill.
After that Canby just couldn’t get the first-game feeling back. Minneota led 7-1 behind Morgan Hennen’s serving and romped to an easy third-game win.
It left Minneota with a 19-1 second record, setting them up for the homecoming game at home Thursday against Renville County West.
