Vikings score 105 points at Fulda to win
It’s time to change the Burt Bacharach song, “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,” .... to, “Three-pointers raining from the sky ...”
Monday night at Fulda the two teams launched 76 shots from three-point range — landed 28 of the long-range bombs in the net and the end result was, Minneota 105, Fulda 83.
“One of their coaches told me they (Fulda) averages 35 three-point shots per game,” said Minneota Assistant Coach Mike Hennen.
He smiled and shook his head. “That’s a lot of three-pointers?” he related.
Well Mike, how about 52 shots from three-point land?
Amazing. Fulda sank 17 of 52 for 33 percent.
Minneota hit 11 of 24 for 46 percent.
“Three-pointers raining from the sky ...”
The difference was Minneota also hit 30, two-pointers to 12 for Fulda — that his, 30 of 57 for 53 percent. For the night, the Vikings were 41 of 81 for 51 percent shooting.
“It was amazing,” Hennen shook his head again.
Someone remembered a score from an Echo Charter game a few years ago that had Minneota scoring 106 points.
But this “Century Mark” of 105 points is a number that will stand the test of time.
While the Raiders were “bombing away” from the outside, they had no answer for Minneota sophomore post Logan Sussner on the inside. He sank 11 field goals, canned five of nine free throws and scored 27 points to lead both teams.
“Logan had a big game inside,” said Coach Hennen.
The Vikings had five players in double figures — Sussner; Jacob Hennen with 24; Thomas Hennen with 17; Nolan Boerboom with 11 and off the bench, Tristan Sorensen with 10. Not to mention the fact Isaac Hennen also had nine.
On the Fulda side, their big man, Matthias Kunerth hit three, three-pointers, went inside for four buckets and hit five of nine from the charity stripe to lead his team with 22. As expected, the Raiders had four others also in double figures with tiny guard Payton Marquardt hitting five, three-pointers and 16 points; Dalton Slinger three, three-pointers and 15 points; Zach Thier and Leighton Gehl 11 points each.
Not that all that “long rang bombing” has done them much good ... they are just 5-15 on the year. But it makes them entertaining.
As expected, the Vikings had their way on the boards, out-rebounding Fulda 46-28. Jacob Hennen, who has become a rebounding machine in the past several games, grabbed 16 and Sussner brought in nine. Kunerth was the man on the backboard for Fuylda with 12 rebounds.
While the win left the Vikings17-2 on the year with a Friday game at home against Canby, it also left them smiles on their faces — afterall, you don’t see 105 points on your side of the scoreboard very often.
