Sussner scores 31 in Lakeview win
Logan Sussner made it impossible for Lakeview under the basket — pouring in 31 points with 15 rebounds as Minneota defeated Lakeview, 89-56 Thursday night.
"Logan works hard and opens things up," said Coach Dave Busselman.
Sussner's efforts under thebasket also helped open up the outside, where Thomas Hennen scored 22 points with 13 rebounds and Jacob Hennen poured in 14 with eight rebounds.
But the nicest surprise was Jared Josephson, who was left open so often he appeared to be the only resident of a private island. Lakeview didn't pay much attention to the light-scoring Josephson so he poured in three, three-pointers for a total of 11 points, while gathering in six rebounds with five assists and three steals.
"Jared helped open up the middle for Logan," said Coach Busselman.
Minneota's effort on the boards was astounding. They collected 53 rebounds to 20 for Lakeview. In addition to the others, Nolan Boerboom had seven rebounds to add to the Viking effort.
Minneota opened up a close game with a seven-point run in the first half for a 37-27 lead, then finally faulted into a 64-43 lead with 7:54 left. Their dominance on the boards left Lakeview way behind — although Aaron Loe with 16 points and Tyler Imes with 15 had nice games for the Lakers.
Coach Busselman wasn't entirely happy with the Vikings defense, saying, "It was not where I wanted it." And he added, "We just didn't handle the ball as well as I wanted."
At the start, the Vikings had trouble hitting their shot and the coach said, "It took us some time to get going."
But when they did — they left the Lakers behind.
This is the third time Minneota and Lakeview have played this year and the Vikings have won all three games.
A couple of highlights came when Mitchell Rost sank a shot after coming off the bench and reserve Nick Hernandez-Martinez sank a three-pointer for the Vikings.
They play at home Friday night against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton as they get ready for Monday's Camden Conference Championship game at Lac qui Parle Valley.
Minneota is now 22-1 on the year.
