The Minneota volleyball team collapsed on the floor in total joy after the final point landed to give them a 3-2 win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and a spot in the state finals. On the right, Lydia Sussner hugged Morgan Hennen and above them, manager Carolyn Hoffmann also let out a victorious cheer.

HOLY COW! Volleyball team upsets Tracy-M-B

•Spectacular performance in five sets lifts Minneota to state volleyball tournament.

Nobody believed — not even many of their fans. The odds were too tough ... Tracy-Milroy-Balaton had dominated Section 3A for three years and the 29-3 Panthers were expected to do it again.

Oh, did we say nobody believer?

That was wrong.

"We wanted it more," said red-faced Lizzy Gillingham as the tears streamed down her face.

"The girls came in 100 percent betting on themselves. They didn't come in scared," said Coach Hayley Fruin.

They came out showing that confidence, stunnig T-M-B 25-21 in the first game; then eking out a 27-25 win in game two to take a commanding 2-0.

They might have swept the Panthers in three, but the Sydney Lanoue-led defending champs wouldn't go away. They came back from an 11-5 defecit, tied it up at 25, then Lanoue smashed the final two points for T-M-B's first win.

The Panthers started straong, taking a 14-5 lead, then coasted to an easy 25-12 win and suddenly it was all tied up at 2-2.

But game five belonged to Minneota, from the start, to the finish, with the Vikings watching T-M-B fumble the final point for a 15-13 win.

And there it was — a spot in the state tournament.

And David had officially defeated Goliath.
