Golf: Girls way off the pace in sections

MINNEOTA : Brooklynn Downing, Carolyn Hoffmann 95; Lauren Bowyer 109; Laura Knutson 113. Others: Allison citterman 118; Natalie Bot 135.

It was a rough first round for the Minneota girls golf team at the Section 5A's first round on Wednesday.

With the Lac qui Parle Valley girls setting the pace with a 340 and Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in second, Minneota finished 72 strokes off the pace in third with a 412. The three, plus Benson, one stroke behind Minneota, will compete for the Section 5A title and trip to the state tournament next Wednesday.

Lac qui Parle Valley's Rachel Halvorson bested the field for medalist honors with a 77.

"Rain, lightning, and especially slow play certainly raised havoc with the focus of golfers at the section tournament. Twice we came back to the club house and remained until a particular storm cell was out of the area! It was challenging for every player on the golf course! More than the rain and lightning was the agonizing slow play," said Coach Greg Gile.

"Overall, I give our players credit for competing under difficult circumstances," the coach said.

The Vikings' best score was a pair of 95's by Brooklynn Downing and Carolyn Hoffmann.

Three of the four scoring members of the Lac qui Parle Valley squad had better scores than Minneota's top scorers.

BBE was led by the Gossen sisters, Jacqueline with an 85 and Jaden with an 83.

"Overall, our girls score was higher than expected with the exception of Carolyn Hoffmann who recorded a 95, her lowest score of the year! Brooklynn Downing also recorded a 95.

Both Carolyn and Brooklynn have a realistic opportunity to advance to the state meet but will need a solid performance on Wednesday."

Section 5A will send a team to the state after the second round of play next Wednesday in Willmar. Individuals will also qualify for the state tournament at Becker.

The Vikings, the Section 5A defending champs, have a long ways to go and will need sparkling rounds next week to get anyone into the state meet.
