For most of the True Team State Meet on Saturday, the Canby-Minneota girls languished in ninth or 10th place.
But when the last several races came around, they began to pile up points. And when the finally tallies came down, the Canby-Minneota girls tied Lanesboro/Fillmore Central with 448.5 points for a fourth place finish.
Minnewaska led from start to finish and ended with 549.5 with Maple Lake second at 505.5 and Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander Kingsland third with 463.
The fourth place finish came on the heals of a fifth place final spot last year and completed a nice two-year run in the True Team State Tournament for the Canby-Minneota girls.
“Yes, it was cold, but we were just glad it didn’t rain,” said meet starter Ken Belanger.
The local girls rode a second and third place finish from Grace Drietz in the 800-meter run and the 1600-meter run. The Canby freshman nearly caught Ellie Danielson of Minnewaska in the 800. Drietz tried to burst at the end but fell two-tenths of a second short with a final of 2:25.12 to Danielson’s 2:24.93. In the 1600-meters (mile run), she settled into the No. 3 spot behind Ava Hill of Mesabi East and Katherine Geist of Crookston, then finished there, about 14 seconds behind the winner.
Her two finishes helped file up points for the Canby-Minneota squad.
Minneota’s Lizzy Gillingham had a couple of nice finishes.
She posted a long jump of 15-8 for third. Emily Smith of Barnesville won the event at 16-1 1/4.
Then Gillingham came back with a nice 100-meter dash time of :13.54 to take fifth. Minnewaska, dominant all day, got a first in the 100-meter dash from Emily Kaiser in :12.95.
The girls only relay finishing in the money was the 4x400-meter relay and they took second in 4:18.57. The event was won by Minnewaska in 4:16.59. Canby-Minneota runners in the relay were: Drietz, Gillingham, Braelyn Merritt and RyAnn Hansen.
