Isaac Hennen had the ball slapped away by Colton Husby of Dawson-Boyd.

Blackjacks sling three's, stop Vikes win streak

Like a gunfighter at a shootout, the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks fired at a 47 percent clip from the field and hit nine three-pointers to snap an 11-game win streak by the Minneota Vikings, 73-67.

"We let them shove us around, particularly the first half," said Minneota Coach Dave Busselman.

The Blackjacks did just about everything right, including hit 85 percent of their three-point shots in the first half and took a 40-26 lead into halftime after leading by as much as 18 points.

Minneota mounted a comeback and got within 65-62, but couldn't penetrate any closer as free throws began to rip the cords for the Blackjacks and they took home the win.

Thomas Hennen led Minneota with 27 points with Isaac Hennen scored 14 and Jacob Hennen and Logan Sussner 10 each. Dawson-Boyd got 20 points from Bentley Boike; 18 from Romell Horton and 15 from Alex Swenson. Minneota's Jared Josephson had seven steals to help the Vikings.

"I don't like it, but we can stomach it," said Coach Busselman about the team's first loss.  "I'm disappointed, but we got beat by a good team. We haven't seen this all year. They slapped us in the face and we let them do it," the coach added.

In the first half Dawson-Boyd could do no wrong — and everything the Vikings touched turned to dust. The Blackjacks had six, three-pointers to two for the Vikings and they were winning the rebound battle.

At one point D-B outscored Minneota 10-2; then 10-0 to build an17-point lead. Slowly the Vikings began to work their way back into the game but still trailed by 16 at the half. It would prove to be too big a hill to climb.

"We held our own in the second half," said the coach. In fact, using the shooting of Thomas Hennen, who scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half, the Vikings got as close as 65-62 — but that one more three-point shot never came.

The Vikings had to start fouling and Dawson-Boyd hit seven of eight free throws down the stretch to put the game away.

By fouling, they lost Thomas Hennen and Sussner to fouls — but only with just over a minute to go.

"They were more aggressive," particularly in the first half, said Coach Busselman.

The Vikings tried getting Isaac Hennen the ball more often and he responded with 14 points with six rebounds. But it wasn't enough.

"It's tough to win at Dawson. We just didn't answer the bell," said the coach.

"This game will make us better," the coach predicted.
