4 individuals, 2 relays advance to state
Four individuals and two relay teams will represent Canby/Minneota at the Class A Track and Field Meet after qualifying through the Section 3A meet Thursday in Pipestone.
The state meet will be held June 9-11 at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
Claire Stoks, a freshman, came in first in 1600 run in a time of 5:33.92, nearly five seconds ahead of runnerup Hailey Werk of Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta.
Aidyn Bruns, a senior, was the high jump champion with a leap of 5-1. Ruby Bones of Yellow Medicine East also jumped 5-1, but Bruns made it in fewer chances.
Trevor Gray, a junior, won the boys' high jump in 6-5, two inches better than Skylar Sherbon of Redwood Valley.
The top two competitors and relay teams in each event, plus anyone reaching the state standard, qualify for the state meet.
Other Canby/Minneota state qualifiers were sophomore Braelyn Merritt, who was second in the girls' 400 dash in a time of 1:01.37; the 4 x 200 girls' relay team of RyAnn Hansen, Aidyn Bruns, Karlie Wollum and Natalie Stoks, and the 4 x 400 girls' relay team of Hansen, Claire Stoks, Braelyn Merritt and Grace Drietz.
The top eight in each event earn team points, while the top six are section medal winners.
Freshman Noehmi Diaz finished sixth in the 300 hurdles to earn a medal, while Blake Stoks was third and Zach Ourada sixth in the boys' 800, and Kolton Duis was third in the 3200 run.
