Marlene K. Lien
Marlene Lien, age 78 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at the care center of the Northfield Retirement Community after a courageous battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).
Visitation will held from 1-2:30 p.m., Sunday, October 21 at Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield, followed by a Prayer Service at 2:30 p.m., with Pastor Tim McDermott officiating.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Monday, October 22 beginning at 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota with Pastor Bruce Drackley officiating.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service with a reception to follow. Marlene Karen (Hoegger) Lien was born August 7, 1940, the daughter of Jacob and Marceline (Hazelberg) Hoegger in Rice Lake, Wisconsin.
She attended country school in rural Rice Lake and graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1958. Marlene received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stout, former Stout State College in Menomonie, WI where she met her soulmate Hanard Lien.
On June 3, 1962, Marlene and Hanard were united in marriage at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church near Campia, WI. Marlene was a home economics teacher and started her career in Trempealeau, WI.
In 1963, Marlene and Hanard moved to Minneota, MN, where she taught school until 2000. Marlene’s passion for teaching touched many hearts and changed many lives.
She earned multiple awards from such organizations like Future Homemakers of America (FHA) and 4-H. She also taught Sunday School and was a mentor to many. Marlene was a member of Alpha Phi Sorority, Sons of Norway, Lions Club, and TOPS/ KOPS Club.
She was the first woman President of Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota.
Marlene is survived by her husband of 56 years, Hanard of Northfield; children Jon (Dana) Lien of Apple Valley, James (Julie) Lien of Davis Junction, IL, and Karyn (Justin) Cattoor of Rosemount; grandchildren Taylor (Sadie) Spanton, Lindsay Spanton, Abby Lien, Mary, Skot, Katherine, Ryan, Zachary, Thaddeus Lien, Cole and Ty Cattoor; siblings Shirley McGiffin of Barron, WI and David Hoegger of Elko, NV; brother-in-law Paul (Jonella) Lien of Killeen, TX; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Marlene was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.
