Jared Josephson relied on his dad Chuck for support after the meet.

CC teams run strong races at Lakeview

Coach Allyson Pesk felt her team was ready for the season opener. “Everyone is ready to go,” she said. And despite the wear and tear of the first meet — both finished well.

No surprise here. Canby-Minneota freshman runner Grace Drietz waltzed home all by herself to win the Lakeview Cross Country Opener on Tuesday in Cottonwood.
But a nice surprise was the sixth place finish of Jalyn Ufkin in the boys race — with Sean Dilley right behind him.
“We finished sixth and seventh,” said a proud Dilley.
Dreitz, who ran a 20:23 5K, has ran in the state meet twice and qualified for the winner’s stand twice in track last year. “She runs with a lot of heart,” said Coach Allyson Pesek.
Finishing in the top five for Minneota were McKenzie Ruether in third at 212:36; RyAnn Hansen 10th at 23:51; Faith Traen right behind her in 11th at 24:1 and Mackenzie Hemish 15th at 25:15.
Redwood Valley won the girls meet with 29 points with Canby-Minneota second at 40. Wabasso had 73; Yellow Medicine East 101 and Lakeview 133.
For the boys, after Ufkin ran an 18:50 as Jayson Peyrel of Redwood Valley won the meet in 17:33. Dilley ran a 19:04 with Blake Stoks at 19:19; Jared Josephson 10th at 19:24 and Alex Full 11th at 19:31. Ufkin felt, “I ran really well, especially for a first meet.”
While he led Canby-Minneota, he doesn’t feel that’s the way it will be in every meet. “It can be any of us. I can said Jared (Josephson), Blake (Stoks) one day, Sean (Dilley) the next. We will change it up all season,” Ufkin said.
As for his Tuesday performance, Ufkin said, “I paced myself a little more. I used to take off fast but this time I stayed back.”
The boys were second to Redwood Valley, which won with 19 points. Canby-Minneota had 43 for second with Lakeview (86); Yellow Medicine East (109) and Wabasso (117) behind them.
The next meet will be Thursday, September 6 at the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton meet in Tracy.
