Fire prevention display on Leland Drug window draws attention
The fire prevention display on the Leland Drug Co. window has attracted much attention this week and favorable comments on it have been heard everywhere. The articles comprising it were made, and the display arranged, by seventh and eighth grade pupils, under the direction of Miss Stockdale and Miss Wells.
Olevsons celebrate surprise golden wedding anniversary
Mr. and Mrs. I.N. Olevson of Minneota were given a surprise 50th wedding anniversary by their children last Wednesday. Many people showed up at their home to take part in the surprise celebration, which included an evening feast, many nice gifts, and hearty congratulations. The Olevsons have lived in this area for over 30 years. Mr. Olevson is a Civil War veteran, a locomotive engineer of long service, and a farmer.

October brings blossoms to Gislason's apple tree
It looked and felt very much like snow on the morning of Oct. 11. Frost had been reported for three successive nights, birds were flying south, and leaves had been piling up. Despite these signs of the times, an independent little apple tree made a final brave attempt to prove that summer was not far behind. Or perhaps the apple tree had gotten its seasons mixed up, for on the morning of Oct. 11, four pale but very perfect and distinct apple blossoms were in full bloom.
Firemen called to Peterson farm south of Minneota
The Minneota Fire Department was called to the farm of Clifford Peterson, eight miles south of Minneota, on Saturday morning when a fire, believed to have been caused by spontaneous combustion, broke out in a shed filled with corn cobs. The building was located only a short distance from the house, and a strong west wind drove the flames in the direction of the house. The shed burned to the ground, but firemen and neighbors succeeded in keeping the flames from reaching the farm home. Sparks from the flaming building managed to ruin several articles of clothing which Mrs. Peterson had just washed and hung out on the line to dry.
Local garden yields carrot weighing nearly three pounds
Had a rabbit seen the carrots Maurice VanOverbeke dug from his garden this week his mouth certainly would have watered. VanOverbeke dug up one carrot that was 12 1/2 inches long and took it into the house to weigh it. It tipped the scale at 2 3/4 pounds. The carrot is normal in every respect and has excellent color and seems to be very solid. VanOverbeke plans to have it for a meal.

Minneota man killed in corn bin accident
Kenneth Skaar, 20, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Kermit Skaar, died last Saturday afternoon in a corn bin accident on his family's farm four miles southwest of Minneota. Skaar suffocated when he became lodged in the corn in the bin, but it is not known exactly how the mishap occurred. The Minneota Fire Department was called and assisted the Skaar family in an attempt to rescue Kenneth from the corn. The firemen worked for about two hours before the body was located.
Three more file for 2 seats on Minneota City Council
Minneota was assured of true races on the Nov. 6 election ballot when three more men filed for the two council positions which have openings as the period for filing ended Tuesday. The three new names entered are Philip Drown, a local bricklayer; Marion (Joe) Johnson, a carpenter; and John (Jack) Rehkamp, a mortician. These three men will seek the two council positions in addition to Jon Narveson and Jon Guttormsson, who previously entered their names.
Library's future to be visited at meeting at Rotary Hall
The future of the Minneota Public Library is to be discussed at a meeting called for that purpose on Thursday evening at the Rotary Hall. This is a meeting at which the local library's service to Minneota is to be aired and a large crowd of interested citizens is expected to attend. Members of the Minneota City Council and the Minneota Public Library have been invited to attend, as well as representatives of the Marshall-Lyon County Library.

Temperatures drop well below freezing; rain possible
Temperatures dropped to 25 degrees Monday night; well below freezing. Rain showers are now possible for later in the week. Temperatures will remain in the 50s during the day. The low temperatures last week were 42, 31, 48, 43, 48, 34 and 25.
Elevators in Taunton, Minneota have reached near capacity mark
Managers of the Taunton and Minneota elevators reported that they are each near capacity. In Minneota, there are 150,000 bushels of corn in the bunker and on the ground., and there is about 100,000 bushels of corn in the bunker and on the ground in Taunton. The elevators have put out a notice for farmers that they will accept only two loads per farmer per day. The corn harvest is around 70 percent complete. Elevators have some corn sold and ready to move but they are unable to move it fast enough.
Jefferson Street gets one new business, building makeover
People traveling along North Jefferson Street in the business district will now notice one new business and another building renovated. The building next to Darlene's Cafe now houses Penny's P’sas hair styling and the building next to it, the former Carl Muhl building, has gotten new siding to give it a more modern appearance.
