Japanese earthquake shown in movie at Community Theatre
Mr. Tucker, manager of the local Community Theatre, scored a big "scoop" for his house when he secured the Japanese earthquake pictures as a news feature and showed them here this week in advance of almost every other city in the northwest. These pictures were rushed to America by the fastest steamer and distributed in this country by airplanes. Every city has been fighting to be the first to secure them.
Van Hecke sets the record straight on his auto accident
Henry Van Hecke, whose car was in the accident reported last week in the Mascot, reported that he was only driving eight miles per hour when the other car struck him and that he had already crossed the main road and was off on a side road when the car struck him. It was reported to the Mascot that both cars in the accident had been going at the rate of 35 miles per hour. Mr. Van Hecke says that he has never driven that fast in his life and he is of the opinion that there is not that much speed in his car.
Sadie McGinn leaves position as chief assistant at post office
Sadie McGinn left for Des Moines, Iowa, on Monday where she has accepted an office position. Miss McGinn has been the chief assistant in the local post office for a number of years and her efficiency in that position is well known. She will be missed by the force at the post office and by the patrons as well.

Orval Spanton named new manager of produce plant
Orval Spanton this week was named manager of A.B. Tracy Company local produce plant. He succeeds Sid Atlas, who held that position for the past three years since former owner A.B. Tracy sold out. Spanton for many years has held a position with the Marshall Produce Company where he was a produce buyer.
Minneotans split on war question poll on Main Street
Several questions were asked local citizens by a Mascot reporter regarding the possibility of war in the near future. Among them was "Will there be war with Russia?". Of the 25 men and women questioned, 13 feared war between East and West within the next few months, while 10 others believe that Soviet Russia will avoid a war, or that a conflict can be averted by this country. The two remaining people polled were undecided.
Lyon County corn support price set at $1.36 a bushel
Support price of the 1948 corn crop in Lyon County has been set at $1.36 per bushel, according to Joseph A. Josefson, acting chairman of the county A.C.A. Committee. The two methods of supporting the prices are through loans and purchase agreements which will be available from the time of the harvest through June 30, 1949, both maturing Sept. 1, 1949. Delivery of corn covered by loans or purchase agreements shall be made within 30 days following Sept. 1, 1949.
Rain halts work on sidewalk project here
Rain which fell here on Wednesday and Thursday halted work on the sidewalk project, which got underway last Friday morning. A portion of the walks on Jefferson Street have been torn up and workmen had begun setting up the forms when rain interrupted the project.

Debbie VanDenBroeke named 1973 Homecoming Queen
Debbie VanDenBroeke, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril VanDenBroeke of rural Minneota, was crowned this year's Minneota High School Homecoming Queen during the pepfest at the school last Thursday.
Three men file for seats on Minneota Village Council
Three Minneota men, one an incumbent and the other two who are new to the political scene, have filed for election in the forthcoming Village Council. Leon Ousman, a veteran Justice of the Peace, filed for re-election to the office last week. Jon Narveson and Jon Guttormsson filed on Monday. Narveson is a junior high instructor, while Guttormsson is business manager at the Mascot. The election will be held on Nov. 6.
Minneota man charged with assault following shooting
A 20-year-old Minneota man (name not provided) is to appear in County Court on Oct. 11 after being charged with aggravated assault as a result of a shooting incident in this village last Tuesday. He has appeared before Judge Irving J. Wiltrour, been advised of his rights, and has had a public defender appointed to represent him. The shooting incident occurred between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m. in a residential area. According to authorities, a car driven by William Odenbrett Jr. was fired upon and hit five times with a .22 caliber rifle. Neither the driver or any of the passengers were hit.
Minneota woman injured following two-car accident
Mrs. Doris Kiley of Minneota was hospitalized a the Wiener Memorial Hospital in Marshall following a two-car accident last Saturday. She was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her son, Robert, when it collided with a Marshall man's auto. Mrs. Kiley received injuries to her neck and above her right eye.

Three incumbents file for Minneota City Council seats
Mayor Joanne Myrvik. and Councilmen Jim Wohnoutka and Dave Meiners all recently filed for positions that they presently hold on Minneota's City Council. The position of mayor is for a two-year term and the other council positions are for four years. The elections for office will be held on Nov. 3.
Rotary Club accepts challenge to raise food for Food Shelf
The Minneota Rotary Club, along with other Rotary Clubs across the country, have been issued a challenge. The challenge is used as a motivational tool to raise food and funds for the hungry across the land. The Minneota Rotary Club now asks for our community's help in raising this food and money. The food will be collected between Oct. 5 and Oct. 23. There will be several collection points in town. The food and funds will be sent to the Community Food Shelf.
City Council votes to refinance wastewater treatment bonds
The Minneota City Council met with a representative from the financial firm of Juran & Moody, and after listening to his presentation and recommendations, voted to refinance the wastewater treatment plan bonds. This is similar to the process that some homeowners opt for, a way of lowering the interest rates paid over the life of the financial plan.
