Five-year-old Minneota girl breaks arm in fall at her home
The five-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sarazyn of Minneota fell from a chair in her home and broke her right arm at the elbow on New Year's Day.
Deen heads to Chicago to attend furniture show
W.H. Deen of Minneota left for Chicago on Wednesday night where he will attend the furniture show that is going on there now. After attending the show in Chicago, Deen expects to travel to Petersburg, Indiana, to visit friends and relatives.

Raise in phone rates takes effect next week
Minneota phone users will have to pay more for the service starting with the new billing on Jan. 13, according to figures released by H.A. Nelson, manager of the Minneota and Marshall exchanges of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. This will be the first hike in rates for Minneota since they were raised in 1919. The new rates for Minneota are: Business and one-party, from $2.50 to $4; Residence from $1.50 to $2.25; Switching fees for rural lines from $4.20 to $6. Installations will be increased from $2 to $3 on business phones and from $1.50 to $2 on residence phones. Moat long distance calls will be raised five or 10 cents with a few rates increasing as much as 15 cents.
Mrs. Coleman to open dress shop in Minneota
Minneota is to have a business place that will handle women's and girls' clothes exclusively when Mrs. Mary Coleman opens her establishment in the former Swift and Co. building the first part of February. Workmen are busy at the present time putting a new brick front on the building and it will be remodeled and redecorated before she opens the establishment. Mrs. Coleman will handle dresses, coats, suits and hats, as well as accessories, for both women and girls.
Taunton youth injured by accidental shotgun blast
Henry Kloos, the youngest son of Mrs. Bertha Kloos of Taunton, accidentally shot himself in the upper arm Tuesday of last week with a 12-guage shotgun. The accident occurred in the hayloft of the barn of his brother-in-law, Joe Kronabetter, who lived north of Minneota. Kloos managed to get from the barn to the house unaided and was rushed to the office of Dr. Wolstan here and was then taken to the hospital in Marshall. The blast from the shotgun tore a hole about five inches in diameter through Kloos' arm and he suffered greatly from loss of blood. Fortunately, the bone in the arm was not broken. Kloos, who is a St. Paul law student, is a graduate of the local high school.
Ghent youngster hurt when hit by Minneotan driver's car
Paul Doom, the 4-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. G.J. Doom of Ghent, received a scalp fracture, and cuts and bruises when he was struck by a car driven by Clair W. Frakes of Minneota. The accident occurred about 6 p.m. when Frakes was driving through Ghent on the main street. The boy ran directly in front of the automobile and Frankes was unable to stop his vehicle before hitting the boy. The boy was taken to a Marshall hospital immediately after the accident.

Slippery road leads to M-G-T truck overturning
An M-G-T bulk oil delivery truck, driven by Jerry Kloos, rolled over late last Friday afternoon in the area southwest of Minneota, near the Marion Stone farm. Kloos received a cut to his head, but Larry Goslar, a passenger in the truck, escaped without injury. The truck was extensively damaged. The mishap occurred when Kloos, whose vision was hampered by falling snow and fog, came to a curve in the road and the truck rolled when it hit a slippery spot and went into the ditch.
St. John's College choir to sing here on Jan. 13
The 75-member choir of St. John's University and the College of St. Benedict will present a concert in the Minneota high school auditorium Saturday evening, Jan. 13. beginning at 8:15 p.m. The choir will sing both religious and secular selections. Admission is $1 for adults and 50 cents for students. The group will spend the day in Minneota, conducting workshops with local music students.
Longtime Ghent bar owner Ted DeRoode dies at 82
Theodore C. DeRoode, 82, who at one time was a resident of Minneota and operated a lunchroom here in the 1920s, died December 26 at the Marshall hospital. DeRoode, who was born in Holland, operated Ted's Bar in Ghent from 1927 until his son, John, became the owner in 1960.

Library Board recognized for service to community
The Board of the Minneota Public Library was thanked publicly for its service to our community by Minneota Mayor Joanne Myrvik during the city council meeting on Monday night. Each of the board members received a certificate and a pin in appreciation for all the time and effort they put into the local library. Those recognized were Library Board Chairman Frieda Geiwitz and Librarian Mary Buysse, as well as members Lorraine Ousman, Marilynn Pagel, Corky DeCock, Audrey Timm, Loralee Miller, Joan DeSutter and Jackie Skillings.
Local volunteers help residents of Breckenridge following flood
Richard Erickson, Ron Moon and Bob Tillemans of Minneota volunteered their time to help residents of Breckenridge following a flood that saw many residents affected. The Minneota Rotary Club sponsored the men's trip to Breckenridge. The three men lweft on Nov. 30 and were part of an eight-man crew to work in Breckenridge. The men put up new walls in the basement bedroom of a rural home that was damaged by the water.
Week's weather here was filled with variety
The past week's weather in the Minneota area gave us a variety of temperature changes and everything from rain to freezing rain to light snow.
