Ice skating rink to be next to Big Store
A small ice skating rink will be prepared on the vacant lots next to the Big Store. The lots have been scraped and an embankment made. When it freezes, the ground will be flooded with water from the city water works. The American Legion will be doing the work.
Ladies Aid to hold bazaar at Opera House
The Ladies Aid of the Icelandic Lutheran Church in Minneota have announced that their annual bazaar at the Opera House above the Big Store will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18.
Teigland good sport after loss in election
J.L. Teigland is qualifying as a good loser. The day after losing his election bid, Teigland was on the street in Minneota with a box of cigars passing out compliments and cigars to the boys who won. The American people like a good loser, and Jake is certainly qualifying as such.

Former St. Leo man drowns in Stalker Lake
Peter Bach, 43, formerly of St. Leo, drowned in Stalker Lake near Wahpeton, ND. Bach, accompanied by Otto Meyer of Wahpeton, went to Sleepy Hollow Resort and hired a boat on Monday afternoon. Shortly before 8 p.m., Alan Hoff, who operates the resort, heard calls for help and got into his boat and headed out. The men were anchored about 40 feet from shore. Hoff saw Meyer floating face down in the water. He held his head out of the water until two other men helped to get him into the boat. Meyer was revived and treated at the hospital for shock. Bach's body was recovered around 11 a.m. the next morning in 10 feet of water.
Donations to finish Legion building up
Turning in almost $3,000 in contributions for the Legion's community building during the past week, workers in the drive to raise funds to complete the structure went way over the halfway mark of the $11,000 required for completion. Total contributions for the fund now amount to $7,500 with the campaign far from completed because of snow and cold weather. Work has been going on whenever weather was allowing and bricklayers have nearly completed laying tile for the walls. When this phase is complete, workers will begin preparations for putting a roof on the building.
Christian education set for Hope Lutheran
The Rev. Elmer O. Ellefson, field representative for the board of parish education of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, will conduct a one-day Christian Education Institute Nov. 18 at Minneota's Hope Lutheran Church, Rev/. J. David Larsen announced. The purpose of the institute is to strengthen and make more effective the parish education program of local Lutheran congregations.

Josefson re-elected to State Senator seat
State Senator J.A. Josefson was re-elected to office again on Tuesday, standing firm against the tide in the state which evidently took control of the upper house of this state's legislature from the conservative party. The Minneota man garnered 61 percent of the votes cast in District 20. He was first elected to the office which he now holds in 1954.
Minneota firemen get called to mystery fire
Minneota firemen were called for a country fire, nine miles southwest of town at about 5:45 p.m. on Monday. When they reached the scene, they discovered that the blaze consisted of some scrap lumber burning in a ditch. One fire fighter stated afterward that it looked to him as though someone had torn down an old building, hauled it to the roadside ditch and dumped it before someone set fire to the lumber.
Minneota voters favor McGovern over NIxon
Minneota voters, out of step with those in the remainder of the nation, cast their votes for Senator George McGovern for president. The voting for president in Minneota was 339 votes for McGovern and 333 for Richard Nixon. Students in grades 10, 11 and 12 at Minneota High School, also favored McGovern in a straw poll. They gave McGovern 195 votes, while 128 favored Nixon.

School referendum passes by 60-40 vote
The District 414 voters turned out to cast their votes for the proposed referendum last Tuesday, with a report of 60 percent of the voters in favor off the plan. A total of 253 "yes" votes were cast, comparted to 186 "no" votes. The proposal is that the district will generate $185.41 per student in additional yearly funding. This referendum is geared toward long-range building improvements at the Minneota Public School.
Moving program given for veterans at school
The traditional Veterans Day program at the high school here drew a large audience on Tuesday. Gary Buysse, Chaplain of American Legion Post 199, gave both the Invocation and Benediction at the program. He led all of the assembled guests in prayer, thanking the veterans for the service they have given to our country. Marilyn Russell. the Auxiliary President, spoke about the American flag and had two veterans demonstrate the proper way it should properly be folded.
Girl Scouts leaders honored at banquet
Several Girl Scouts leaders were honored Tuesday at an Awards and Retirement banquet held in the City Community Room in Minneota. A 20-year Service Pin was presented to Darleen Dorenkamper for her years as a Minneota Girl Scouts leader. Cheryl Schmitz was presented an Appreciation Pin for serving the MInneota Girls Scouts with distinction as an assistant leader. Dee Koppien received an Honor Pin for her nine years of service as Brownie and Junior Leader. Elana Nomeland was given an Atta Girl Award for her years of dedicated service to Girl Scouts, serving as Brownie Leader and Junior Leader.
