Four Dakota language signs being installed in Redwood County
The Lower Sioux Indian Community invites members of the media to attend the unveiling of the first of four Dakota language signs being installed in Redwood County by the Lower Sioux Indian Community and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).
The first dual-language sign will be unveiled at 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 29, 2019, on County Road 24, near Reservation Highway 5 in Morton.
MnDOT recognizes the unique sovereign status of federally recognized tribes and the cultural values of all American Indian tribes in Minnesota, and is committed to strengthening the government-to-government relationship with the tribes.
Tribal Governments have requested that certain traffic signs display both English and the Dakota language on roads and highways that traverse tribal lands.
The purpose of the signs is to assist the Tribes with the revitalization of their language and to inform all people of the historic pre-settlement names. The four dual-language signs being installed in Redwood County designate Lower Sioux Indian Community boundaries. Members of the media are welcome to attend the unveiling and speak with Lower Sioux Indian Community members about preserving the Dakota language.
If planning to attend, please park at the Jackpot Junction Amphitheater, 39375 County Road 24, on the west side of the gravel parking lot.
A shuttle coordinated by the Lower Sioux will provide transportation from the amphitheater to the sign unveiling location.
