Decorative ‘flasks’ on auction
Virgil Ufkin, who recently passed away at the age of 100, had some unique items in his possession at the time of his death. One of them was a collection of decorative “flasks” that he purchased from the American Legion.
His family has donated them to the American Legion. And now, Legion Commander Jim Fink hopes to have them on sale at the St. Edward Flurry of Fun next weekend at the American Legion in Minneota. The hope is to raise funds for both St. Edward School and The American Legion.
The flasks depict one of the famous aspects of the city from which they originated. Each one also has the date of the flask and the community which it represents. For instance, Hawaii’s flask is made in the shape of a pineapple.
New Orleans has a pelican and Philadelphia has the Liberty Bell.
Even the Minneapolis area is represented. A round flask is a replica of a building at Fort Snelling in Minneapolis. Other famous sites and even individuals are themes of the flasks.
And each bottle is filled with drinkables.
The hope is those bidding at the Flurry of Fun auction will find the “flasks” a unique item to add to any collection.
The Flurry of Fun uses donated items to go on sale to raise funds for the St. Edward School. The event will be held at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Minneota American Legion Building.
A “Silent Auction” plus the live auction and dinner will be highlights of the annual event.
The Flurry of Fun is part of the annual National Catholic School Week which runs all this week at St. Edward School and Church. The week kicked off with a breakfast, Scavenger Hunt and Catholic School Mass on Sunday.
There are events every day, including a Medallion Hunt, making of blankets from a collection of fleece and collection of hats for cancer patients. The annual spelling bee will be held at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
An alumni lunch, human foosball and a career day event for a special collection for the Sisters of Mary Morning Star in Ghent will also be held.
The most popular event for the kids has book the annual “Mardi Gras,” that will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
Board games will also be held that day along with a family lunch at the local cafeteria.
