Signs like this one have become difficult to read.

Board to replace worn county signs

Have you noticed some of the county road signs are getting hard to read? The Lyon County board has noticed it too, and Tuesday they voted to do something about it.

They approved purchase of new intersection street signs for the county.

“The rural intersection signs installed in 2006 are in need of replacement,” said County Engineer Aaron VanMoer.

“We purchase them, put them up and the townships will be in charge of maintenance,” said Commissioner Rick Anderson.

VanMoer said approximately 25 percent of the sign posts will also need to be replaced. The county will purchase 104 township signs for township locations and 434 of county, township and state signs.

The cost of the township signs will be $9,600 and the 434 county, township and state signs will be $40,000.

VanMoer estimated the cost of $53,000 for all township signs. Commissioner Anderson stressed the need for “uniform replacement” of the signs and said, “Let’s get one person in charge of getting it all done and be done with it.”

Commissioner Anderson also made a motion for Lyon County to replace all of the signs.

“From then on, it’s the townships’ responsibility to take care of them,” he said.
