Louwagies Lyon County Farm Family of the Year
Since 1993, brothers Peter and Scott Louwagie have been running the family farm near Green Valley.
Peter's wife, Melissa, who is the CFO of Western Mental Health Center, and Scott's wife, Janelle, who is the Hy-Vee Pharmacy manager in Marshall, also work on the farm.
The Louwagies were recently honored as the Lyon County Farm Family of the Year.
Peter and Melissa have four children, Caitlin, Zackery, Benjamin, and Cassie. All have worked, or currently work, on the farm at one time or another.
Scott and Janelle have two children, Blake and Adeline. They help take care of the calves.
The family farm was started by Oscar G. Louwagie, who emigrated from Belgium in 1948. He returned briefly to Belgium, got married to Alice Leeman, and then returned to the United States and farmed near Green Valley. In 1968, Oscar and Alice moved to the current farm site where they had dairy cows and chickens, as well as corn, soybeans and alfalfa.
When Oscar passed away in 1993, Scott and Peter took over the farm operations and have been maintaining it ever since. The farm now includes 90 dairy cows and a finishing dairy beef operation. They also raise corn, soybeans and alfalfa like their father did.
