HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL
Brooke DeSmet drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and pitched five innings for the win as Minneota/Canby upended Montevideo 8-5 on Monday in Montevideo.
The Vikings improved to 4-1 overall with the win, scoring six times in the second inning and the other two runs coming in the fifth.
Seven players had at least one hit during the Vikings’ 10-hit onslaught. DeSmet, Isabelle Hulzebos and Joelle Otto had two hits apiece. Kiersyn Hulzebos, Faith Myhre, Tessah Anhalt and Kenadi Arndt had the other hits.
DeSmet worked the first five innings, allowing six hits and two runs, while walking two and striking out nine. Otto worked 1 2/3 innings before Autumn Tooley recorded the final out for the save.
Lily Eisenlohr went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Thunderhawks. Taya Weber took the loss.

Vikings take two from YME

In a pair of games that went down to the wire, Minneota/Canby completed a sweep of Yellow Medicine East, winning the first game 7-5 in extra innings and then winning the second game 6-5 on Tuesday in a Camden Conference doubleheader in Minneota.
Joelle Otto got the win in both games, the first in relief and the second a complete-game, five-inning victory.
Minneota/Canby trailed 4-3 entering the seventh inning of the opener before scoring twice in the top of the inning to grab a 5-4 lead. YME plated a single unearned run in its half of the seventh, forcing extra innings.
Minneota/Canby then scored two more runs in the eighth. Otto, who pitched the final two innings in relief of Brooek DeSmet, held the Sting scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win.
Dakota Pesch drove in three runs with a two-run double and a bases loaded hit by a pitch.
DeSmet hurled the first six innings and scattered nine hits, while walking three and striking out seven.
Bayli Sneller pitched all eight innings for YME, allowing seven hits and four earned runs while striking out 15.
The teams combined for 10 errors in the first game.
In the finale, the Vikings (3-1) scored all six of their runs in the fourth inning. Kiersyn Hulzebos knocked in two runs and Dakota Pesch and Autumn Dooley also drove in a run. The other runs scored on errors.
Otto allowed four hits and two walks, while striking out five in the five-inning game.
Kiersyn Hulzebos went 3-for-6 with two RBI in the two games. AshleeAnn Cole Frazeur was also 3-for-6 with three doubles and an RBI. Tessah Anhalt went 2-for-5, with a double and an RBI. Pesch drove in a total of four runs in the two games.
