Minneota exploded for 10 runs in the first inning en route to a 12-2 victory over Canby in the season opener Thursday at K.P. Kompelien Field in Minneota.
The Vikings had not been able to hold a full practice outdoors prior to this game, while Canby had practiced outside for less than an hour.
"The day before we were at St. Ed's to hit a bit," Minneota coach Keven Larson said. "Other than that, we were outside to play some catch and field some fly balls behind the school."
Leadoff hitter Peyton Gillund went 3-for-3 to account for half of the team's hits, while also driving in three runs. Isaac Pohlen, Peyton Sheik and Brody Larson had the other hits for the Vikings, who invoked the 10-run rule after five innings.
"There were a couple of guys that put the ball in play, but we just took advantage of a few walks and ran the bases well," Larson said. "Peyton Gillund had a good day at the plate with three hits."
The Vikings also capitalized on eight walks, two hit batsmen and two Canby errors to score their runs.
Normally, pitching isn't sharp early in the season, especially with limited time spent practicing outdoors. But three Viking hurlers limited the Lancers to just three hits and two walks.
Sheik started on the mound for Minneota and tossed three shutout innings, allowing just one hit. He walked none and struck out five. Jackson Lacek came on in relief and pitched one inning and gave up one earned run. Gillund finished and pitched a hitless inning with two strikeouts.
"Peyton Sheik has grown into a very solid starter," said Larson. "He has improved his mound presence and has been very consistent while we have been practicing this spring. Jack does a good job throwing strikes when he gets into the games, and Peyton Gillund is very good at the end of the games."
The game was initially postponed due to rising water from the Yellow Medicine River that flooded the entrance to the ballpark the previous day. But the water went down and the weather improved enough to get the game played.
"The field conditions were really good," Larson said. "It would have been nice to get there a day ahead of time, but the overflowing river didn't allow us to do that."
