Ole Pappy

There are some very special kids in the Minneota senior class this year. This column will address two of them. There are several more. It’s hard not to be impressed by Isaac Hennen.
Take a look at the photo of him consoling an opponent after a close basketball game.
Of-course, we’ve been documenting Isaac’s accomplishments all year and he’s an amazing young man. Another is Alex Pohlen. For the football fans, you’ve followed him for four years as the Vikings quarterback.
During that time, he’s won three state championships and won 51 of 52 games he played.
Now, Dakota Wesleyan University welcomed Pohlen among 61 high school seniors to their campus last month for the DWU Scholarship Days and they awarded some very special scholarships.
Students with outstanding academic records, leadership potential and a commitment to service were invited to campus to meet with faculty, staff and students, and further investigate the opportunities DWU has to offer academically and co-curricularly.
Pohlen was one of them. He’s already committed to playing football at DWU. And now he’s received the Randall Scholarship at Dakota Wesleyan University at Mitchell.
This is a very important honor. To compete for a Randall scholarship, students must have at least a 3.5 GPA and a 24 ACT/1090 SAT score and must meet certain leadership/service qualifications.
The award may amount up to $21,000 per year, and is renewable for up to 10 semesters if the student remains in good standing. Alex Pohlen is a senior at Minneota High School and the son of Nathan and Cari Pohlen.
Alex fought back from a serious shoulder injury a couple of years ago to lead his team. And, he likely will be one of the top baseball players this spring — playing just about any position he’s asked to play.
To do all that and earn the academic honors he’s getting is really something special.
Congratulations Alex!
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: As my Ole Pappy used to say, “Remember if you love life, it will love you back.” Ole Pappy loved life and wanted others to love it as well. Share a little love of life with someone today!
Thanks Ole Pappy!
