75 Years Ago-February 18, 1944
Firemen called out Tuesday evening
The Minneota Fire Department was called to the farm home of Robert Mack who lives on the Joe Mack farm place nine miles southwest of Minneota Tuesday evening. A fire which had started in the kitchen of the home was under control when the department arrived. It is estimated that the damage done to the house was in the neighborhood of $500.
Shower in Ghent
A parcel shower was given in honor of Miss Florence DeBaere, bride-to-be of Gus Buysse of Marshall Sunday afternoon. Cards were played and a delicious lunch was served.
Taunton wedding
Miss Lorrine Swedzinski and Wm. McMahon of Taunton were united in marriage on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 9:30 at the Taunton Catholic church. A wedding dance followed at the Taunton hall.
Senden-Standaert
Miss Deborah Senden became the bride of Mr. William Standaert on Tuesday, February 1, at the St. Eloi’s church in Ghent. The Rev. Father Pilger performed the ceremony.
50 Years Ago-February 20, 1969
Champions
The squad of cagers from Ghent won the St. Eloi Conference tournament at Tracy last Sunday. The players are: Greg Jensen, Mark Boerbom, John Wignes, Greg Engels, Dan Maertens, Ward Wyffels, Bob Hennen, Duane VanKeulen, Dernard DeCock, Don Cable, Steve Farasyn, and Bill Wixon. Don Boerboom is the coach. Bernard DeCock was named the tourney’s most valuable player and he, along with Greg Engels, and Bob Hennen, were named members of the all-tournament team. The cheerleaders for the St. Eloi basketball team are Cindy DeSutter, Glenda Noyes, Lorette Boerboom, Marilyn DeSaer and Rosemary Senden.
Wins television set
Mrs. Lawrence Lantgen of Minneota was the winner of a television set given away at Finnegan’s Super Valu.
Gunderson Awarded Canby Home Addition
Gunderson Construction Co. of Minneota received word that it was being awarded the contract for erecting an addition to the nursing home at Canby. The Minneota firm erected the original structure, which was completed in 1965.
Al Geiwitz collects 40 as Vikes Trample Lynd
The Minneota basketball five broke two records last Saturday when they romped over Lynd 101-62. The first record broken was made by Sam Boerboom for the 98th and 99th points on a field goal for the team. The second was that of individual scoring by Al who racked up 40 points as he hit for 17 field goals and six free throws.
25 Years Ago-February 16, 1994
Nuytten takes first in oratory contest
Jessica Nuytten, representing the local District #199 American Legion Post, participated in the District Oratory Contest February 12th in Marshall. After her speech and extemporaneous discussion, Nuytten came out with a first-place finish and the chance to go on to further competition.
Minneota Area Chamber of Commerce Achievement Award Winners
Presented with Achievement Awards at the Annual Banquet of the Minneota Area Chamber of Commerce Saturday evening February 5 were Barb Okrina, Carol Driemeyer, Richard Erickson, Darleen Dorenkamper, Rebecca Day, Sister Helen Janssen, Lynette Nelson and Deborah Winter.
Birth Announced
Scott and Roberta Josephson are proud to announce the birth of their son, Adam Scott, born Tuesday, February 15, 1994, at Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall. Adam weighed 10 lbs. 7 oz. and was 21 1/2 inches in length. He joins a sister, Erin, age 5, at home.
Interactive Television comes to the community
The school districts of Canby, Minneota and Marshall have recently teamed up to develop a new Interactive Television system which enables more participation, more opportunities, and more educational programs to be offered. Beginning in February, two offerings have been scheduled. An Introduction to Grant Writing will be presented by John Bowden and an Introduction to Sign Language will be taught by Tracy Bloch.
