Funeral service for Frederick “Freddie” John Gottskalkson, 88, of Porter, MN took place on Friday, March 14, 2025 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Minneota, MN. Public visitation began one hour prior to the funeral. Following the service, a luncheon was provided at church. Upon conclusion of the luncheon, a graveside service took place at the Lincoln Icelandic Lutheran Cemetery.
Freddie passed away unexpectedly at home on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
Frederick “Freddie” John Gottskalkson was born on Nov. 16, 1936 on the family farm in rural Porter to Jack and Eleanor (O’Connor) Gottskalkson. He grew up attending country school in Alta Vista Township until he completed the eighth grade. Freddie continued to work on the family farm until he enlisted into the United States Air Force.
While he was stationed in Salina, KS he met and fell in love with Marlene Schlesener. The couple was married on May 10, 1959 in Hope, KS. Shortly after their marriage the couple returned to the rural Taunton, Porter area until establishing their family farm outside of Porter.
Freddie was a farmer, a sheep shearer and worked for McLaughlin Schultz for over 50 years. He was an avid card player and enjoyed country music. Fred’s friends and family were important to him. Fred also enjoyed sharing meals with his family…. especially dessert.
He is survived by his wife Marlene Gottskalkson; sons Greg (Nona) Gottskalkson, Jeff Gottskalkson, Randy Gottskalkson, Daniel Gottskalkson; grandchildren Jody (Nate) Jones, Brad Gottskalkson, Justina Gottskalkson, Anthony (Amanda Stattleman) Gottskalkson, Kasey (Brice) Denney, Jennifer Gottskalkson; 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; siblings Douglas Gottskalkson, Mary (Ronnie) Grengs, John Gottskalkson.
Freddie is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Eleanor; sisters Patricia Gottskalkson and Ingrid Gottskalkson; niece Erica Schmitt.
Special thank you to the nurses and staff at Boulder Estates where Fred spent 7 years, also his caregivers for the last year Kasey, April, Caryn, Carla, Joni, Nancy and Brice.
