School transitions to One-Act Play

Minneota High School has made a change to its Fine Arts program, joining the Minnesota State High School League-sponsored One-Act Play starting next spring.
Previously, the school had a spring play and a fall musical. The spring play has been phased out as they will offer students to compete in sub-section, section and state in One-Act Play instead.
"We will still have a fall play or musical," said Activities Director Patty Myrvik. "That will be to the director's discretion as to whether it will be a play or musical."
A director is expected to be named soon.
The number of students participating in a fall play or musical has exceeded those in the spring.
Several students expressed a desire to compete in One-Act Play, similar to speech team members in which they have a chance to advance to a section or state competition.
The fine arts proposal was presented to Minneota School Board members and it was approved at a meeting on Tuesday, July 18.
One-Act Play teams are allowed only 20 members, including those working on the sets as well as the actors. All 20 members are judged, including those behind the scenes, on how they work together and interact.
"If we have more than 20 students that want to participate, we might have enough to create a JV team that can perform at a Fine Arts Spectacular that we are working on having," said Myrvik. "That would also include speech members and anyone in a fine arts program.
The One-Act Play team would begin rehearsing in December with sub-sections on Jan. 27, section on Feb. 3 and state tournament on Feb. 8-9.
"I'm looking forward to it," said Myrvik. "We still have two offerings for those that want to be in a play or musical so we're not taking anything away. I think the kids will be excited to compete in the one-act play."
