Rev. Olafson's son
injured in accident
Marino Olafson, the son of Rev. K.K. Olafson, well known to Icelanders here, was seriously injured in an automobile accident in Mountainm N.D., about a week ago. It is said that Marino is improving and his recovery is assured, according to the latest reports.

Several here attend
party in Gary, SD
Several Minneota residents made the trip to Gary, SD to attend and anniversary party for Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Humbert Sunday afternoon. Those attending were Mr. and Mrs. G.M. Kerney, Mr. and Mrs. S.B. Erickson, Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Johnson, Annis Anderson, Dora Askdal, Jennie and Sigga Frost, Christine Dalmann, Freida Gilbertson, and Mr. S.T. Gilbertson.

July 4, 1947

Storm damage is
estimated in millions
Damage to crops and buildings in Lyon, Yellow Medicine and Lincoln counties in last Friday's storm was estimated to be between four and six million dollars by various officials. The storm hit between 10-11 p.m. Crops were totally destroyed and buildings on 200 sections of land in the storm that swept into the state at the South Dakota border. It came as far west as Minneota, then hit the Ghent community, jumping from there to the east end of Yellow Medicine county and went into Redwood county. In Minneota, damage to crops by the large hail was estimated at 10 to 50 percent. The area south of Canby and Porter was hit particularly hard. Crops there were totally destroyed and every building in the path of the storm was damaged. Windows in nearly every home in Porter were broken by hail, while large plate glass windows in businesses were also shattered.

Grong appointed to
school board here
Hans Grong was appointed a member of the Minneota school board until the next election at a meeting of the Board of Education of Independent School District No. 20 held Tuesday evening. He will fill the vacancy caused by the death of E.R. Coleman. Grong was also elected president of the board for the coming year, taking over the position held by Coleman. Sherlock White was elected clerk and Norman Olafson was elected treasurer. During the meeting, the board took bids on a 36' x 50' four-stall, fireproof garage for the school buses.

Jaschke nominated
for postmaster job
President Harry S Truman has nominated John J. Jaschke for postmaster in Minneota, according to a news item appearing in Tuesday's Minneapolis Tribune. Truman sent the nomination the Senate on Monday. Should Jaschke be named postmaster here he will succeed Stanley Josephson, who has been acting postmaster for the past three years.

TV cable work
progressing here
Jerome DeSutter, a former Minneotan now living in Windom, said Tuesday morning that he and his crew will have installation of the main television cable here completed by next week. This installation is being made by Minneota Cable TV of which DeSutter is owner. Next week, his men will begin hooking up homes in the community. Approximately 300 people have signed up for cable.

Slain deputy's rites
held in Taunton
Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Taunton for Lawrence Felcyn, a Redwood County Deputy Sheriff who was shot and killed in Morgan, MN last Sunday evening. The deputy was 32 years old and was raised in the Taunton community, first on a farm outside of town and then in town.

Silver Spurs plan
annual Horse Show
The Silver Spur Saddle Club has set Sunday, July 9 as the date for its annual Open Horse Show. As in former years, it is to be held at the Hennen Park, two miles east of Minneota, past the golf course, as is to begin at 12:30 p.m.

Right turns now
legal on red light
After July 1, drivers in the state of Minnesota will be permitted to make a right turn against a red stoplight unless an information sign prohibits the turn, according to the Minnesota Safety Council, but certain conditions must prevail before you can make the turn. First, you must come to a complete stop. Second, you can't make the turn if there are pedestrians in the crosswalk. Third, you must yield to any vehicle traveling in the lane in which you intend to turn.

Hope Lutheran
celebrates 125th
After nearly five years in the planning, Hope Lutheran Church celebrated the 125th anniversary of its congregation this past weekend. The 125th anniversary committee was headed by Rita Dovre. Allan Josephson, Roberta Josephson, Linda Okrina and Earl Skaar assisted. One of the most unique displays at the anniversary was the "Confirmation Chain" that was linked throughout the church. The chain has 2,086 links, with the name of each person confirmed there written in calligraphy. Gerald Olsen secured the names of the people who were confirmed and Beulah Olson did the calligraphy work.

Women of Today
note Founder's Day
Members of the GMT Women of Today join together with Women of Today everywhere to recognize Founder's Day on July 1. The decision to form the U.S. Women of Today organization was finalized on July 1, 1985. GMT (Ghent-Minneota-Taunton) Women of Today will be celebrating their fifth year together. The GMT Women of Today meet the second Thursday of each month at the Minneota City Community Center.

VanVooren presented
award from Rotary Club
Gayle VanVooren was presented the 1996 Community Service Award from Minneota Rotary club president Jack Hennen at a recognition dinner on June 26 at the Madison Avenue Apartment Community Room. VanVooren has been active in the community's music programs and Boxelder Bug Days activities. She is the editor at the Mascot. The Community Service award has been a part of the Minneota Rotary Club since 1965. At the conclusion of the meeting, Hennen stepped down as president and turned the gavel over to Charlene Tillemans.
