Highway open

Highway 68 is open again and people are very happy. This is great news but it also means that we need to be extra careful as we drive. People will be so excited to use Hwy 68 again that I anticipate above-average speeds and unsafe passing. A few things you can do to increase safety:
1. Slow down. The posted speed limit is the maximum speed you can drive. Going a few MPH under the limit will give you extra time to stop in an emergency.
2. Stay off of your phone, even with Blue Tooth. If you know people will be driving too fast give 100% of your attention to the road.
3. Turn on your headlights at all times. This gives people a better chance of seeing you at a distance. Remember daytime running lights don’t turn on your tail lights.
4. Increase the distance between yourself and the car in front of you. The more space you have the greater chance you have of stopping and not rear-ending someone.
5. Avoid passing and watch for those that are passing. Many people are killed every year when they try to pass other vehicles. It isn’t worth it.
6. Deer will be moving and you don’t want to hit one of them.
7. Farmers are still moving crops and equipment.
8. Watch for road workers on the shoulder who will be picking up signs and doing the finished work. Everyone wants to make it home at the end of the day.
