Former resident, noted writer, Holme, dead at 45
A telegram received here on Thanksgiving morning from New York, announced the death of John G. Holme, 45, a leading newspaperman and noted writer. His death followed an operation for stomach trouble. Holme spent his youth in Minneota and in this vicinity.
Viking pioneer of Westerheim dies
Knute Broughton, the Viking Pioneer of Westerheim, succumbed to pneumonia last Sunday. He had been ill for nine days. He was 77 years old. His funeral was held at his home and was officiated by Rev. Ottestad of Cottonwood.

Hatchery to have 10 times more capacity
Minnesota's largest producer of three-week old chicks, Dr. Kerr's Hatcheries, started preparations this week for the seventh year of operations by sending farmers and poultry raisers throughout the United States more than 25,000 circulars announcing prices for the coming season. Capacity of the hatchery was about 10 times greater last year than when the first eggs were set in 1941.
Two babies born on complicates matters
There could very easily have been a mix-up in babies at the Marshall hospital last Thursday when wives of two different husbands named Julius Locy, both of Minneota, gave birth to boys. The boys were born within 10 hours of each other. To make matters even more complicated, the baby boys weighed nearly the same when born. The first baby, born at 12:30 p.m., is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Locy, who live south of Minneota. He weighed seven pounds, six ounces. The second baby born to Mr. and Mrs. Julius Locy, who live in Minneota. He was born at 10:30 p.m. and weighed seven pounds, eight ounces.
Lerschen named mayor of Ghent
Harold Lerschen will be Ghent's mayor after the first of the year as a result of drawing lots last Thursday to break a tie between him and the incumbent, C.M. Janis. in the recent election. Each received 52 votes for mayor. Election officials canvassed the vote to determine if there had been a miscount, an after it was determined that the first count was correct, a drawing was held.
Vikings defeat Lynd in boys basketball
The Minneota Vikings, seeking revenge for defeated suffered at the hands of strong Lynd teams in former years, were victorious in last Friday evening's encounter with the basketeers from the hills, emerging winners at the conclusion of the contest, 35 to 29.

MBA announces two drawings for Yule turkeys
Two drawings, with more than 45 turkeys to be awarded after each one, were announced by a Minneota Businessmen's Association committee this week. The committee promises that the birds will be given to lucky shoppers at local stores and that over 90 turkeys are up for grabs. Coupons to be filled out are printed on other pages in this issue. Winners with the winning coupon should go to Finnegan's Super Valu to pick up the birds.
Hilltop Western Store to open in Minneota
Hilltop Western Store of Minneota will open for business on Thursday and Friday of this week. Mrs. Jim Driemeyer is the owner of the store. Hilltop will be located one block north of the trailer court and items for western fans will be offered for sale. Free coffee and cookies will be served all day.
Plans activated for Boy Scout troop here
There are plans being formulated for a Boy Scout troop in Minneota if enough boys show interest. Jack Rehkamp, who is attempting to get the troop started, said that boys who have completed the fifth grade, or are 11 years old are eligible. Parents should contact Rehkamp to sign up their son.
Stores to stay open nights for shoppers
All Minneota stores will be open seven nights from now until Christmas, it was announced this week. These extra hours for businesses are for the convenience of Yule gift shoppers. Residents of this area are asked to keep the local businesses in mind when planning purchases for the holidays. Evenings they will be open are Thursdays, Dec. 7 and 14. and the evenings before Christmas, Dec. 18, 19, 20, 21 and 22.

Jason Johnson earns Eagle Scout pin, plaque
Jason Johnson of rural Minneota was awarded a pin and a plaque by Scout Master Jerry Bottelberghe for achieving Eagle Scout status at a Court of Honor Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Senior Center. Johnson is the son of Mark and Jo Johnson, who were in attendance as well as other Scouts and their families. Johnson has been with the Scouting program for over 10 years.
Gillingham 2nd in World powerlifting Championships
Brad Gillingham, competing in the Super Heavyweight Division, earned the Silver Medal in all-around in the World Powerlifting Championships in Czechoslovakia. At the tournament, he won the Gold Medal in the bench press at 573 pounds, won Silver in the deadlift at 805 pounds, and was a silver medalist in the squat with 788 pounds. A spaghetti supper fundraiser was hosted by the Minneota Jaycees to help defray the expenses of Gillingham's trip and to allow people to meet and congratulate Gillingham.
Vikings finish first in MCC wrestling tourney
The Minneota Vikings wrestling team won all three of its matches to finish first in the Murray County Central wrestling tournament last weekend in Slayton. The Vikings blanked Blooming Prairie 77-0, and also beat Fulda/Murray County Central 47-11 and Harrisburg, SD, in the championship 28-27. A pin by Ross Eischens at heavyweight secured the win in the championship. Others with pin in the final match was Ben Vlaminck at 125 pounds and John Myhre at 152.
Girls basketball team opens season with win
The Minneota girls basketball team, coached by Gary Kurka, opened the 1997-98 season with a 73-51 win over Ortonville. Brittany Dalager made 12 of 16 shots and finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with eight rebounds. Amber Hennen sank 9 of 12 shots and finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
