DeBoer captures first feature win at I-90 Speedway in SD

In his third season racing at I-90 Speedway in Hartford, SD, recent Minneota graduate Garet DeBoer captured his first Late Model Street Stock feature race this past Saturday.
What made the win even more special for DeBoer was that he and his father, Ken, together built the No. 33 car. Garet has developed into an excellent welder through classes at school and was able to utilize his skill in building his car.
“We built it lower so it’s faster and drives much smoother than the car I raced last year,” said Garet.
The chassis of his car this year came from a 1970 Chevelle. The engine was custom built by Performance Motor Shop. He also used some parts from the car he raced last season.
Garet won his heat race on Saturday and was then placed in the third row outside lane, or in sixth place, for the feature race.
“I was hoping to finish top four,” Garet admitted. “We had a restart early in the race and I moved up to fourth place for that.”
Garet got a good start off the green flag and moved into the lead during Lap 3 and maintained the lead through the remainder of the 18-lap race. “Two weeks ago, I led the race for 16 laps and I was pretty nervous and I screwed up a turn and didn’t win,” he said. “This time, I felt good all the way. I didn’t realize that I was going to win until the white (last lap) flag. I hit the last turn pretty well this time.”
For the feature win, DeBoer was presented with a large trophy after the race.
“I was pretty excited,” he said. “It was definitely a relief to finally win.”
Garet is currently in eighth place in the Late Model Street Stock point standings despite missing one race so far this season.
“I’m hoping to finish in the top five or six this year,” said Garet, who was ninth a year ago. “I feel I am a much better driver and this car is more competitive this year.”
Garet also races in Brandon, SD on Sundays and other special dates throughout the season.
