Conservation Tips

Let’s go over but a very few examples of conservation tips that help reduce pollution and save money on utility bills.

•To reduce air leaks, whether in summer or winter, check around doors/windows for spaces that need caulking/weather-stripping.

•Be sure there’s adequate insulation in the attic. •In the summer when you’re running the AC, be sure to keep windows and doors closed. And, keep the shades down/curtains closed on the ‘sunny side’ of the house. Of course, keep windows and doors closed in the winter to keep the heat in but take advantage of the sun’s heat and open the curtains/shades. •Clean/change filters on the AC just like you do in the winter for the furnace. •Keep any heat sources, e.g. lamps, TV’s, etc. away from thermostats. The heat from them can cause the thermostat to interpret air temperature inaccurately causing excessive cooling.

•Turn off lights/any electrical items when they’re not being used. •In the summer, use a toaster oven, slow cooker or microwave instead of an oven. •Clean the coils/fins on the refrigerator.

•Clean the lint trap in the dryer. •When possible wash clothes in warm or cold water.

Water heater doesn’t have to work as hard that way. •Conserve energy and water by taking short showers. Remember: No one can do everything but everyone can do something.

So let’s all do something!

Until next time, keep reducing, reusing, recycling buying. For info or if your club is interested in a presentation (free) regarding recycling/waste reduction and hazardous waste disposal, call the Lyon County Environmental Office at 507-532-8210.
