Take a gander at the volleyball and football polls this week. It won’t take you long to notice the name Minneota at the top of both polls. Now, rankings are not an adequate way of judging the best teams in the state.

But they are the best way we have so far. After watching Minneota’s volleyball team perform last weekend in Burnsville against some of the best teams in Class 1A in the state, I’ve got to tell you it’s a well-deserved honor.

They ran through the competition like a hot knife in butter.

It’s still only the middle of season and a lot of things could happen, but I can’t recall ever seeing Minneota’s volleyball team so far ahead of the rest of the field in the entire state.

And the football team, coming off a state championship and 4-0 this year, should be getting the top ranking.

People are still shaking their heads and wondering how Minneota continues to have one powerhouse after another — in more than one sport at a time.

Fact is, it doesn’t come because you wish for it. It takes a lot of hard work on the parts of a lot of people to create the kind of results Minneota gets from its athletes.

While athletic honors are wonderful, it’s nice to see Minneota has reached high levels of academic success as well. Last week, we reported good grades in testing during the past testing period.

Administrators have said many times the trick isn’t to get to the top, the trick is to stay there. And they intend to keep attaining academic success.

So while we celebrate the status of No. 1 in football and volleyball — let’s be mindful to also celebrate the No. 1 or at least high status our students are attaining the field of academics.

LAUGH A LITTLE: Only a dream? Tonight I dreamt of a beautiful walk on a sandy beach. What happened? I woke up and found footprints in the cat litter box.
