75 Years Ago-January 21, 1944
Will celebrate President’s Birthday
A birthday party, celebrating the birthday of President Roosevelt, will be held at the Legion Hall in Porter on Monday evening January 31. Dancing, games and booths will furnish the evening’s entertainment. There will be no admission charge at the door.
Firemen’s group holds meet here
Members of the Minneota Fire Department were host at a meeting of the West Central Firemen’s Association here on Monday evening of this week. More than 100 visiting firemen were present at the meeting.
Dr. C. E. Eastwold wins Beaver Award in Scouting
Dr. C. E. Eastwold, for the past 16 years Scoutmaster in Minneota, was awarded the Silver Beaver last Sunday evening, January 16. Dr. Eastwold has been Scoutmaster of the local troop since its organization in February, 1928. The Silver Beaver is the highest award given to Scouters. This award is given as a recognition for extraordinary work in Scout over a period of years.
Sidney Gislason heads Ninth Bar Association
Sidney Gislason, formerly of this place, now of New Ulm, was elected president of the Ninth Judicial District Bar Association at the annual meeting held at New Ulm on Saturday, January 15. Senator Alexander Seifert of Springfield was elected vice-president and P. M. Meehl of Marshall was re-elected secretary and treasurer of the association.
50 Years Ago-January 23, 1969
No Go
A Chicago and Northwestern snowplow, traveling northwest, was stopped midway between Ghent and Minneota last Friday afternoon. Cause of the halt wasn’t snow, but a small section of rail missing, letting one wheel of the diesel slip to the tie below. The plow and what was behind it came to a halt on the driveway to the Mike DeCramer farm home and the cars behind the plow had to be disconnected and shoved back before Mr. DeCramer was able to travel on the lane to his farm.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Bot, of Ghent, are the parents of a boy born on Tuesday of last week, at Weiner Memorial hospital in Marshall. The baby has been named Michael Thomas.
Fun at Camp Courage
Intensive speech therapy in a relaxed atmosphere, combined with regular camping activities, each summer is beneficial to many Minnesota youngsters with speech and hearing difficulties. Brett Lamphere, son of Mr. and Mrs. Del Lamphere of Minneota, was one of the youngsters from Lyon county who benefitted from a session at Camp Courage last summer.

Howard Huso, Minneota area farmer, was “studying” some of the literature on display at the Minneota Crop Show last Thursday morning. Others were conversing with Bob Byrnes, Lyon County Extension Agent.
Employees proud of their product
The employees of Grill Works, Inc., located at Superior Truss, are proud of the fine handcrafted wooden grills that they are producing for homes and office. Receives Star of North Award
Lois Winter of rural Minneota, administrative secretary in the Academic Affairs area at Southwest State University in Marshall, recently received a Star of the North Award from the Minnesota Department of Employee Relations.
Geography students compete
The public school had recent competitors in the Geography Bee staged for students in the sixth through eighth grades. Second place finisher Anna Hagen, Stephanie Johnson, School Champion Sarah Broughton, Chris Winter, Ross Eischens, Lisa Abels, Travis Obe, Nick Esping, Damon Mead and Eric Hammer.
