75 Years Ago-September 3, 1943

Huso-James

Private Leroy Huso, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Huso of Minneota, and Miss Eleanor James, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert James of Minneapolis, were married in San Diego, Calif., on August 6.

St. Edward’s school opens

September 7 The parish school of St. Edward’s church in Minneota will begin its new term Tuesday morning, September 7. Mother Fidelis will again be superior and seventh and eighth grade teacher. Two new teachers have come to the convent. They are Sister Lucienne, who will replace Sister Angelica in the fifth and sixth grade room; and Sister Norinne, successor of Sister Emerita in the third and fourth grade. Other teachers are Sister Leonora, music, and Sister Vera, first and second grades. Sister Christell is housekeeper at the convent.

50 Years Ago-September 5, 1968

933 Students begin school terms Tuesday

When the two Minneota schools - St. Edward’s and the Minneota public - opened their doors Tuesday morning for the 1968-69 term, a total of 933 students were in attendance. This figure was just four less than a year ago when the two institutions here enrolled a record number of students.

New Princess Kay

A beautiful brunette from Marshall is Minnesota’s new Princess Kay of the Milky Way - the fourth girl from this part of the state to take the coveted award. She is Linda Louwagie, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Louwagie, and she received the crown from Carla Rae Larson of Minneota, who won the title last year.

52 start term at Taunton school

A total of fifty-two students were enrolled in the Taunton public school when classes started this week for the 1968-69 term.

142 enrolled in two Ghent schools

At St. Eloi’s Catholic school in Ghent there are 133 students enrolled. In the Ghent public, there are nine students. Two perform at Pipestone Fair Robin and Rhonda Pesch, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Pesch of Minneota, performed at the Pipestone County Fair on August 20th. The girls did a “Land of Hiawatha” routine which included acrobatics and a sacred Indian mask dance in full costume.

Away They Go!

Two hundred and sixty pheasants, at the rate of 25 birds to a section, were released by members of the local FFA chapter last week. David Fier, chapter member, and his brother Duane and David and Lawrence Vlaminck, of the chapter, released the birds. The birds were raised on their farms with the Minneota Businessmen’s Association furnishing feeds for the birds.

25 Years Ago-September 1, 1993

Royalty at the Minneota Manor

The first “official” business has taken place for Boxelder Bug Days. The new King and Queen have been crowned at the Minneota Manor. Marie Boncquet of Marshall and Cyriel Van Watermuelen of Minneota will reign over the upcoming event, and will ride in the parade on September 12th.

New signs near Minneota

Two new signs, one on the east and the other on the west, were put in place this week to advertise our upcoming Boxelder Bug Days celebration.

Open house at City offices

Everyone is invited to come and tour the newly remodeled Minneota City Offices this Friday, September 3, from 2 - 5 p.m.

James Meger shares wildlife prints

Community First National Bank officer Bob Nelson points to just one set of wildlife prints by James A. Meger that are on display at the local bank. A total of ten prints are on display, and can be seen during normal working hours at the bank. Meger has donated the prints to the people of this area, the place where he grew up.
