75 Years Ago-Oct. 30, 1942
P. J. Haas installed
Patrick J. Haas succeeds Leo Buysse as chief ranger of St. Edward’s Court No. 1498, Catholic Order Foresters. He and his staff of newly elected officers were installed Sunday night at formal services in St. Edward’s school auditorium. The public was invited and a good crowd was present.
Buried alive in corn
An accident happened near Porter Saturday in which a man was buried alive. Emil DeVos of Taunton, who was working on a corn sheller at the Isfeld brothers farm south of Porter, went into the crib to rake down some corn, when an avalanche of the corn suddenly came down and covered him completely. A moment later he succeeded in crawling out, no worse for his experience.
Ghent boy hurt
Don Claeys suffered a broken collar bone and bruises when his car overturned Saturday night, while he was on his way to Lynd. The accident happened about 10:30 p.m. when the storm was at its worst, the snow blinding him. Freddie Bot, who was in the car also, was not injured.
27 Air Spotters Organized here
K. E. Jones, chief observer, and Clarence Larson, alternate, are now the head of a corps of 27 Eidsvold air spotters who were organized Thursday evening. This is an important cog in national civilian defense. In an emergency, the post is manned 24 hours a day. The army will conduct activation of the post when the time comes. Mr. James appointed Mr. Larson, Alfred Rabaey and Albert Borson as a committee to select an observation site.
50 Years Ago-Nov. 2, 1967
Firemen called for three blazes
The Minneota Fire Department was called to three alarms this past week. The first one on Friday was at Wilfred Kockelman’s when a switch on the furnace burned out causing considerable smoke in the basement. The second alarm was on Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. when a pump shed on the Roseville Josephson farm was completely destroyed. Mr. and Mrs. Josephson were in Chicago on a trip and the fire was discovered by Clarence Hamerlinck, who lives near there and he noticing the glow in the sky, drove over and turned in the alarm from there. The third alarm was on Tuesday at about 1:00 p.m. when some brush and hayland on the Vic Josephson farm, now owned by George Buysse, got out of control and got into a cornfield. The cornfield had been picked so no damage was done.
Practicing play scene
Three members of the junior class of the Minneota high school, Gary Janssen, Ruth Jeremiason and Bradley Lawrence, practiced a scene from the play, “Gramercy Ghost” which they are presenting Friday, November 10. There are 12 members in the cast of the comedy which is being directed by Herbert Pagel.
Help Eisenmenger
Alfred Eisenmenger recently underwent surgery, so a group of 23 farmers gathered at his farm south of Minneota to pick 70 acres of corn. The men brought with them nine tractors and two elevators. M-G-T Co-op Oil Co. of Minneota furnished the fuel, Verdick’s Midway Store provided refreshments and a noon meal was provided by a group of women.

The Library receives fine gift
The Minneota City Library was the recipient of a NM190 Microfiche, thanks tot he generosity of the Community First National Bank of Minneota. The system is in place at the Library and plans are to make it an integral part of the research department.
Police Chief talks to the children
With the upcoming Halloween trick ‘n treating night, Police Chief Bob Axford talked to children in the elementary schools about the importance of being extra careful that night. Bright yellow bags were handed out to the children.
Football and Volleyball teams in tournaments
The senior members of the football team are: Jason Myhre, Jesse Larson, Jayme Sussner, Shawn Patch, John Rolbiecki, Scott Van Keulen and Jon Konold. They ended their season with an 8-1 record. The Senior members of the Volleyball team are: Karin Anderson, Krista Anderson, Karen Fier, Tawnya Fier, Stephanie Ekstrom and Sharyce Vlaminck.
Senior Dining directorship to change
After filling the position as the Senior Dining Director for almost two years, Lorraine Hansen will be retiring in November. Mrs. JoAnn Myrvik will become the new Director. Mrs. Myrvik will be taking her orientation from November 5th through 13th, in preparation for the new position. Mrs. Hansen has been the Director for the past (almost) two years. She has seen many changes, especially the move into the new facility.
