Vultures lose to Luverne, 7-1 in Sub-State

“Luverne brought their lumber,” Tuesday at St. James.
In the first inning they hammered out five runs on four hits with the help of a wild pitch. A double by Jake Huagen and triple vby Declan Beers — plus a walk and hit batter by Minneota starter Brant Buysse fueled the explosion.
Luverne went on to a 7-1 win over the Minneota Vultures.
“Their hitters hit the ball hard and with some outfield gaps, they scored five runs,” reported Jim Rolbiecki for the Minneota Mascot.
Buysse didn’t last through the third inning when he was relieved by Preston Nuy and he finally gave way to Teddy Pesch.
In the second inning Sam Buysse led off with a single, but was thrown out trying to steal by Luverne catcher Colby Crabtree.
In the third inning and for the second straight inning, a Minneota runner was thrown out at second as Buysse tried to stretch the single into a double.
The Vultures finally broke through in the fourth.
Teddy Pesch singled and Alex Pohlen walked. Landon Abraham continued Minneota’s mastery of the bunt and sacrifice them along. Pesch scored when Luverne shortstop Haugen bobbled the vall.
But Luverne pitcher Derek Lundgren was able to get Sam Buysse to fly out and Jaymes Moon to pop up to end the threat.
Lundgren would retire 11 of the final 12 Minneota hitters. Only a single by Abraham in the sixth broke into the tough Luverne hurler’s arsenal.
Meanwhile, Luverne picked up a pair of runs in the fifth off Nuy. A pair of walks set up the rally for insurance runs and a sacrifice by Isaiah Bartles and single by Mark Sterrett brought in the two runs.
Rolbiecki reported, “not enough hits,” for the Vulcans, as they got just four against Lundgren, who fanned four and walked just on and hit one. Luverne had four hits — but made them count.
Getting Minneota’s only hits were Brant Buysse, Pesch, Abraham and Sam Buysse.
The Vultures drop down into the losers bracket in this double elimination tournament. They will play Truman, a 14-0 winner of St. James. They will play at 5 p.m. on Thursday at St. James.
Wells, beaten by Minneota in the first round, rebounded to throw Wabasso out of the tournament with a 6-4 win.
Wells plays Springfield or Windom at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
If Minneota keeps winning, they will play at 5 p.m. Friday and 7:30 p.m. Friday in the losers bracket.
The championship game is set for 5:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at St. James. A second game could follow, if necessary.
