Vikings stymie Canby again, 48-31
McKenna Yost scored a game-high 14 points in a solid all-around performance and Minneota turned back Canby 48-31 on Friday night to complete a two-game sweep of the Lancers.
"I'm not sure what caused McKenna to be more aggressive," said Minneota coach Chad Johnston. "She is a great shooter and does need to look to score more. I think she is beginning to realize that.
Yost sank 5 of 12 shots from the field, including one three-pointer, and all three of her free-throw attempts. She also finished with three steals, two rebounds and two assists for the Vikings (13-0).
"We did put in a play that is designed to get (McKenna) open looks and we did run that a couple times against Canby," Johnston noted.
Minneota beat Canby 55-41 in a low-scoring game earlier this season in Minneota.
"Canby was patient on offense early in the game and did try to slow the game down by keeping us out of our offense," Johnston said. "We did runs some pressure defenses in the first half that allowed us to speed up the game and create the separation we got in the first half."
Minneota led 31-12 at intermission.
"(Canby) played a defense that switches on screens and that did a nice job of keeping us off balance on offense," Johnston added. "We really did not have a good answer for them and I think that frustrated us. We did force some things and took some ill-advised shots."
Minneota shot only 32 percent against the Lancers and made only 5 of 19 three-pointers (26 percent), but made up for it with a 21-10 turnover differential, including an aggressive defense that came up with 15 steals.
Abby Hennen added 13 points, five rebounds, five steals and three assists for the Vikings. Natalee Rolbiecki finished with 10 points, while Abby Rost had six points and 11 rebounds.
McKenzie Ruether had 10 points and four steals for Canby. Aidyn Bruns had six points and 14 rebounds.
