Vikings split 2 matches at Willmar

Minneota split with two bigger schools, topping Class AAA Little Falls 36-32 and falling to Class AAA No. 7-ranked Willmar 40-26 in the Willmar Triangular Tuesday night.
Troy Van Keulen won both of his matches at 126 pounds, Jonah Gruenes won each of his matches at 170 pounds, and Hudson Scholten won twice, once each at 220 and 285 pounds.

Hutchinson Invitational
(Results Saturday, Jan. 22)
Minneota senior Jonah Gruenes won the 170-pound individual title at the Hutchinson Invitational on Saturday. Gruenes won by pin in the quarterfinals, then earned a major decision in the semifinals. In the championship, Gruenes won a 6-2 decision over Tyson Ricker of Becker.
Minneota, ranked No. 12 in Class A by The Guillotine, was the smallest teams in the tournament that featured ranked teams in Class AA and AAA.
Becker, No. 3 in Class AA, won the tournament with 224.5 points. Watertown-Mayer/Mayer Lutheran, No. 7 in AA, was second with 211.5 and Willmar, No. 7 in Class AAA, placed third with 191 points.
Minneota finished sixth with 114 points despite having five open weights.
Peyton Gillund was second at 120 pounds, going 2-1 with two pins. Kade Lozinski was also second at 132 pounds, also going 2-1.
Hudson Scholten was fourth at 220 pounds, Troy Van Keulen was fifth at 126 pounds, and Adam DeVlaeminck, Zack Fier and Alex DePestel were all sixth at 106, 152 and 160, respectively.

Quinton Anderson earned the first win of his varsity career, starting a string of five straight wins to give the Vikings a 26-0 lead.
Anderson pinned his Lancer opponent in 5:22. Adam DeVlaeminck then earned a decision at 113, followed by consecutive pins by Peyton Gillund and Troy Van Keulen at 120 and 126.
Canby then earned a pair of wins to cut the Minneota lead to 26-9 before the Vikings rattled off four more wins in a row. Zack won by forfeit at 152, Alex DePestel notched a pin at 160, Jonah Gruenes won by technical fall at 170, and Branden Johnson won by forfeit at 182.
Hudson Scholten capped off the Vikings' scoring with a forfeit at 285.
