Vikings lose baseball opener
Minneota opened the baseball season at Ruthon Monday and came out on the short end of a 9-2 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton win.
The Vikings used three pitchers, starting with Sam Buysse through Cole Sanow and Grady Moorse — but they surrendered 11 runs, gave up a six-run fourth inning and couldn’t contain the Knights.
RTR got a stellar performance from Payton Hess, who struck out seven hitters in six innings, allowed just four hits and went 3-4 at the plate with three doubles, two runs scored and three runs batted in.
The Knights ripped 11 hits off the three Minneota hurlers, including run-scoring hits by Parker Wendland, Kyle Fischer and Collin Johnson.
For the Vikings, Thomas Hennen doubled and scored; Teddy Pesch singled and scored and Landon Rolbiecki had a hit. Tate Walerius in knocked in a run.
After the big fourth inning, RTR led 8-0. Minneota plated a pair of runs in the sixth — but no more.
The Vikings will play their second game of the year today, Tuesday at home against Lakeview. The game was to be held Thursday but the expected bad weather caused the game to be moved to Tuesday.
