Abby Hennen hit for the cycle in the first game of a doubleheader at home Thursday and finished the day going 5-for-6 with four extra-base hits and six RBI as Minneota/Canby split the twinbill with Tracy-Milroy-Balaton, winning the opener 15-12 and losing the finale 15-5.
The Vikings (5-6) continue to hit the ball well, pounding out 28 hits in the two Camden Conference games, including 10 extra-base hits. But the team also made 12 errors that led to 14 unearned runs for the Panthers.
"The bats are finally coming alive for all of the team .... hopefully they stay alive," said Minneota/Canby coach Heidi Boerboom. "We need to minimize our errors and keep the bats going to improve0. We knew coming into the season we just had to be patient and work on improving every day."
Summer Hennen also had five hits in the two games for the Vikings. Abby Rost, Faith Myhre and Ashlee Ann Cole had four hits apiece in the twinbill, while Lexi Sanow had three.
"Faith Myhre(grade 9) has moved up to varsity and looks like she's found a place at third (base)," said Boerboom about the freshman. "She's hitting, bunting and running great, too."
In the opener, Abby Hennen swatted a double in the first inning, a triple in the second, a single in the fourth and a solo home run in the sixth.
"She's a force offensively and defensively." said Boerboom. "She's made some very impressive pickoffs and runs the bases so smart and aggressively."
The first game saw the lead see-saw back and forth. Minneota/Canby led 6-4 before TMB scored twice in the top of the fourth to tie it 6-6, In its home half of the fourth, the Vikings plated four runs to grab a 10-6 advantage before the Panthers fought back and and scored six times in the fifth for a 12-10 lead.
The Vikings then put up five more runs in the sixth and held on as Ava Larson held the Panthers scoreless in the top of the seventh for the win.
Larson went the distance, scattering 16 hits. She walked three and struck out six. Nine of the runs scored poff her were unearned.
The Vikings amassed 19 hits in the opening game. Abby Hennen went 4-for-4, while Rost was 3-for-5 and drove in two runs, and Summer Hennen finished 3-for-3. Myhre, Larson, Cole and Sanow had two hits apiece.
Mady Swan took the loss for TMB. The Panthers had 16 hits, including two each from Swan, Megan Surprenant, Jadyn Lessman, Kiarra Danielson, Camille Dolan and Kamryn Petersen.
In the second game, the Vikings were hit by committing seven errors that led to five more unearned runs for TMB.
The Panthers scored in every inning, including a six-run sixth inning that invoked the 10-run rule with one out.
The Vikings notched nine hits off winning pitcher Jadyn Lessman, who walked one and fanned three. Myhre, Cole and Summer Hennen had two hits apiece. Cole also drove in two runs with a triple.
TMB finished with 17 hits. Lessman, Petersen, Danielson, Amber Heusch, Grace Dolan and Margaret Dolan had two hits each.
Madison Hennen, a seventh grader, started in the circle for the Vikings and pitched the first three innings and absorbed the loss. She allowed seven hits and four earned runs. Larson pitched the final 2 1/3 innings.
"Madison has stepped up to be our second pitcher," Boerboom said. "She's throwing strikes and helping us out immensely. We are getting there ... little by little."
