Vikings extend winning streak to 8
On Senior Night, Minneota extended its winning streak to eight with a pair of wins against Adrian Area and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in a home triangular on Friday.
Zack Fier, a sophomore, chalked up his 75th career win with a second-period pin against KMS at 145 pounds.
Minneota (18-4) has only two seniors on the team; 120-pounder Eric Carrasco and heavyweight Trey Gronke, who were honored for their contributions to the program.
In the first match against Adrian Area, the Vikings won nine matches, four by first-period pins and five by forfeit. Destin Fier started things off for Minneota with a 53-second pin at 106 pounds. Peyton Gillund followed with another quick pin, this one in 55 seconds at 113 pounds.
The Vikings then received three consecutive forfeits for a 30-0 lead.
After Adrian picked up a pin at 138 pounds, the Vikings got consecutive pins again. Zack Fier made even quicker work of his opponent, notching his fall in 51 seconds at 145. Alex DePestel then earned his fall at 152 in just 1:18.
Minneota recorded pins in six of its eight victories over KMS; Carrasco at 126 pounds, and then consecutive falls from Zack Fier at 145, DePestel at 152 and Jonah Gruenes at 160.
The Fighting Saints led 17-9 before the three straight falls gave the Vikings a 27-17 advantage they would not relinquish. KMS did win the next two matches to whittle the Minneota lead to 27-26.
The Vikings finished off the dual by winning the next three matches, first-period pins from Hudson Scholten at 195 and Jayden Gamrak at 285, plus a decision by Jackson Esping at 220.
