Minneota limits Lancers to 108 yards; host YME for Homecoming

Jacob Hennen passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as Minneota stymied Canby 21-6 in a Camden Conference game on Thursday night.
All the game's scoring came in the second quarter.
"I thought we did a lot of good things offensively and defensively in the first half," said Coach Chad Johnston. "In the second half, when we made some big plays on offense, we had some big penalties."
The Vikings' defense did not allow a point as Canby's lone score came on an 85-yard kickoff return. The Lancers knocked on the doorstep in the first quarter, reaching the one yard line, but were stopped on first down and then fumbled the snap off shotgun formation on second down. Conner Sik then recovered the fumble.
Minneota opened the scoring when Hennen connected with AJ Myhre for an 11-yard touchdown. Peyton Gillund added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Canby then returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown and the failed to convert the extra point, leaving the Vikings with a 7-6 lead that they would relinquish.
Hennen then connected with Joey Rybinski for a 25-yard scoring strike, with Gillund again converting the kick for a 14-6 advantage.
The Vikings capped the scoring when Hennen ran for a score from four yards out following a long drive. Gillund's kick was good.
"Jacob is a nice double threat," said Johnston. "He can throw the ball well and he runs well. We had a couple of chances on some deep throws that we missed, but that's just a timing issue."
Hennen finished 12-of-22 for 123 yards and two touchdowns. Myhre caught seven passes for 77 yards and the one score. Cael Sorensen had three receptions.
The Vikings rushed for 204 yards, with Conner Sik gaining 109 yards in 19 carries. Hennen finished with 81 yards in two carries. Joey Rybinski gained 20 yard in three attempts.
Neither team scored in the second half as the defenses both played well.
"Credit Canby, they made some adjustments in the second half and kept us out of the end zone," Johnston said.
AJ Myhre paced the Vikings with 10 tackles and an interception. Beau Banish had eight tackles, Jacob Citterman seven, and Tucker Thooft and Joey Rybinski six apiece.
Minneota outgained Canby 321-108 in total yards. Minneota had 7 first downs to only four for the Lancers.
The game avenged a 13-0 loss to the Lancers in last season's playoffs.
Minneota hosts Yellow Medicine East in a Homecoming game Friday night at K.P. Kompelien Field.

NOTE: MACCRAY, who Minneota played the week before, has been shut down for two weeks because a player tested positive for COVID-19. The Wolverines were scheduled to play Russell-Tyler-Ruthton last week and Canby this week. The players and coaches were told to quarantine for 14 days. Canby picked up a game against Martin County West to fill out their schedule.
