Minneota's Morgan Kockelman grabbed a rebound in front of her Pipestone defender.

Viking girls win 'rough house' game

Assistant Coaches Dale Kockelman and Al Panka were livid with the style of play Pipestone used in a 64-50 Viking win over the Arrows Monday night.

"There were 29 fouls (by Pipestone) and there could have been twice that many," said Kockelman. All total, the two teams had 46 fouls; 61 free throws (38 that were good) and two Pipestone players, Zoe Velde and Carman Skyberg fouled out.

"This is the style they play, very rough," added Panka.

While Coach Chad Johnston talked with his battered players after the game, the two assistants unraveled a story of how Pipestone "always" seems to play this style of basketball.

The 6-6 Arrows fell behind 28-14 early in the game and never were able to catch up. But they kept on battling until they got within seven points in the second half. The Vikings, who were being "mauled in the middle" kept trying to penetrate but couldn't get the ball to center Lydia Sussner.

"They were hanging all over Lydia no matter what she did," related Coach Panka.

Sussner was able to grab 15 rebounds and score 13 points. She went to the free throw line for 11 shots with five hitting pay dirt.

But it was the long-ball shooting and penetration to the basket by sophomore Morgan Hennen that turned the tide for the Vikings. She hit a three-pointer in the first half and another for a 39-25 lead in the second half. Morgan Hennen was the game's leading scorer with 17 points and she grabbed five rebounds.

"We missed a lot of close shots," said Coach Kockelman, but as physical as this game was, it was fortunate the Viking scored as much as they did.

Minneota had four players in double figures. After Hennen's 17, sister Abby Hennen had 14, Sussner 13 and Morgan Kockelman 10. Natalee Rolbiecki came off the bench to grab six rebounds and score seven points. Lizzy Gillingham scored three for the Vikings.

Kockelman, the point guard, sank two, three-pointers and kept the Vikings charging the basket despite the roughness inside.

"It's been this way every time we come here," Coach Kockelman added.

Pipestone's Velde scored 11 points and was the only player in double figures. Others wee: Miranda Hulstein 9; Shelby Bloemendaal 7; Carman Skyberg 8 and Mandi Miller six.

Minneota will be at Kerkhoven on Thursday. They are now 12-3 and have a seven-game winning streak.
