Win over Yankton

PRESS DAKOTAN DAILY—Yankton, SD — A sluggish first quarter spelled doom for the Yankton Gazelles in their first game after the Christmas break.

Minneota jumped out to a 16-5 lead after one quarter and led by as many as 15 before claiming a 45-34 victory over the Gazelles in girls’ basketball action on Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. The game was part of the Hoop City Classic.

Morgan Hennen finished with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Abby Hennen had 12 points and five assists for Minneota. Abby Rost added 10 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.

Sadie Fedders posted 10 points and three steals for Yankton. Madison Wuebben had seven points and seven rebounds. Kelsey Oswald added four assists.

Minneota scored the game’s first five points and quickly built a 14-3 advantage, mostly on baskets inside the lane.

“We were sluggish and slow on both ends of the floor in the first quarter,” said Yankton head coach Trey Krier. “We didn’t play our style.”

Minneota led 20-8 early in the second quarter, but Yankton held the Vikings scoreless for the rest of the period.

“We had to get up in their shorts more,” Fedders said of the defensive effort. “We needed to settle down a little bit.”

Yankton worked back to within seven, 26-19 before an 8-0 run to end the third quarter and start the fourth gave the Vikings their largest lead, 34-19. Minneota kept the Gazelles at bay the rest of the way.

“I thought we did a good job of finding a way out of it,” Krier said. “We had better intensity after the first quarter.

“We just have to make shots.”

Yankton struggled from the field, making just 4-of-26 shots in the first half (.154). The Gazelles finished the game 13-for-55 (.236), including 3-for-20 from three-point range (.150).

“We spent way too much time in the summer working on shooting to shoot like that,” Krier said. “The good news is, we get to get back on the floor tomorrow against a team similar to Minneota in the Pentagon with a state tournament atmosphere.”

The Gazelles struggled shooting but took care of the ball, committing just three turnovers. Yankton forced 15 turnovers, including seven steals.

The Gazelles (2-2) continue in the Hoop City Classic today (Saturday) against another school from Minnesota, Sibley East (4-10). The game is a scheduled 5 p.m. start at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
