Viking boys win two in playoffs

The Minneota boys' baseball team defeated Red Rock Central/Westbrook Walnut Grove 14=5 and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, 10-0 on Saturday in the Section 3A opening games.

They will advance to play Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Milroy. A win puts the Vikings into the section finals. A loss will vault them into the losers backet.

Minneota 14, RRC/WWG 5

Minneota broke open a close game in the sixth inning with seven runs to defeat Red Rock Central-Westbrook-WB, 14-5 in the opening round of the South Section 3A Tournament.

They trailed twice, 3-0 and 5-4 before scoring twice in the fourth on RBI singles by Teddy Pesch and Alex Pohlen to take a 6-5 lead.

They added one in the fifth and the seven-spot in the sixth.

Sam Buysse started on the hill for Minneota but needed relief help from Teddy Pesch, who picked up the win.

Buysse struck out six before leaving and Pesch fanned three more.

Thomas Hennen delivered the biggest hits of the day, going 2-2 with three walks, a single and triple. His triple unloaded the bases in the sixth but he was thrown out trying to score.

Jacob Hennen added a double that knocked in two runs.

The Vikings will play the winner of the SWMC/Edgerton vs. Russell-Tyler-Ruthton game at 3 p.m. Both of the first round winners advance to the Section 3A Tournament next week. First round losers are eliminated.

Thomas Hennen had three hits and Brant Buysee struck out nine batters and gave up just hits as the Vikings beat RT, 10-0.

It came after RTR defeated Edgerton/SWMC, 6-5.

Tate Walerius scored three runs as a courtesy runner while Jaymes Moon had a key hit and Sam Buysse singled in two runs.
