THOR Wrestlers

THOR wrestlers had successful year

The “THOR” Wrestling Club out of Minneota, completed its Freestyle/Greco season at the USA National Regional Tournament in Rochester, MN. The “THOR Wrestling Club” is a regional Freestyle/Greco Club which draws wrestlers from Southwestern Minnesota and trains in Minneota.

The club includes wrestlers from Dawson-Boyd, Madison, Montevideo, Canby, Minneota, Pipestone, Tracy, Marshall, Redwood Falls and MAHACA (Morris Area Hancock Area Chokio Alberta).

The wrestling club is a chartered USA Wrestling Club and is managed and coached by Brock Buysse, Steve Banks, Eric Rose and J.D. Pesch. “It’s a good experience training with kids from kindergarten to seniors in high school,” said Pesch. “The younger kids look up to the older kids, and the older kids get energized from the younger kids,” he said.

They have a lot of fun with the age difference as well as building relationships with area wrestlers whom they compete against during the high school season of Folkstyle Wrestling.

The club also has guest clinicians from SDSU and SMSU, including Rylee Molitor, Seth Gross (National Champion), Luke Zilverberg (All-American), as well as former U of MN Gopher and USA World Team Member wrestler, Dan Zilverberg.

“We train two nights a week starting in mid-March and wrestle at four to six tournaments across the state,” he said. During the past few months, the club traveled to the following state qualifying tournaments: Eastview in Apple Valley, Apple Valley High School, Cannon Falls, West Central Area, Forest Lake, and Owatonna.

These tournaments are qualifying tournaments to gain a state tournament berth. The State Freestyle and Greco Tournaments were held in Rochester on May 11-12.

Dylan Louwagie of Marshall and Caden Rose of MAHACA have been selected to the Minnesota National Dual Team Competition.

THOR GOLD Summer Training

Mondays and Thursdays, 7:30-9 p.m., June 10 through August 8. Focus on drilling and perfecting core/basic techniques. Sessions will be short, high paced, and focus on one area per session.

Technique will include skills that overlap Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco. There is great benefit to drilling and training wrestling on a weekly basis. Three-five day camps are good but often retention of the material is lost in the four months before winter season starts. There is a cost.
