Season ends for Legion Vultures

Alex Pohlen had the look of a man who'd just lost his best friend.

"They were a good team," Pohlen said after the Minneota Legion Vultures lost to Truman, 12-0 in five innings at St. James Thursday to end their season.

It also ended Pohlen's career as a high school-Legion baseball player.

Truman blew open the game in the fourth inning with a nine-run rally.

"You never want that to happen," said Pohlen.

Truman ace pitcher Zach Jahnz retired eight of 10 Vultures he faced, got help from a double play after a Truman error in the second and walked Jaymes Moon in the third.

After Truman took the 12-0 lead, Jaynz came out to save him for the next game.

Reliever Owen Wolter surrendered just a bloop hit to left field by Pohlen and a single to Moon in the fifth.

Jahnz, who threw up to 87 miles per hour, struck out five Vultures.

"They hit the ball hard and our offense was just off," said Pohlen.

Truman banged out 10 hits, including a grand slam home run by Derek Schoen in the nine-run, fourth inning. The slam put a cap on the rally that doused Minneota's chances of moving on in the double elimination tournament.

"It was a tough day," Pohlen added.

Earlier in the day, Wells eliminated Windom from the tournament with a 3-2 win. Wells and Truman will play at 5 p.m. to see who keeps their hopes alive.
