Thomas Hennen threw a shutout against Dawson in game won to win, 2-0. Alex Pohlen scores a run on a wild pitch.

Schuelke's number retired, Legion sweeps Dawson in double header

On Thursday night, the Minneota Senior Legion team hosted a double header with Dawson. Minneota took the first game 2-0 and won the second game 9-4.

In between games, both teams were on the field as Donnie Schuelke's number 11 was retired. Schuelke was a co-captain of the varsity team and passed away on June 25 due to a tragic car accident.

Players, coaches, fans, community members and the Schuelke family were on hand.

Schuelke's classmates unveiled a beautiful baseball with angel wings in centerfield that Coach Keven Larson made.

While Hennen struggled with control, walking six batters, he gave up just a single hit to Braeden Thompson in the fourth inning. He struck out six batters as well. His teammates got him all the runs they’d need in the fifth inning, when Alex Pohlen scored on a wild pitch by Dawson pitcher Alex Swenson. In the sixth, they brought in an insurance run on a walk and Dawson error.

Otherwise Swenson was also a tough customer on the mound, allowing just four hits. He also fanned six and walked six.

THE SECOND game was opposite the first. A single by Braxton Thompson scored a Dawson run for a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Austin DeVlaeminck tied it for the Minneota Legion when Pesch singled him home for a 1-1, first inning tie.

Minneota scored two more in the third, with DeVlaeminck scoring on a double by Brock Fox and Fox coming home on an infield out. But they broke it open in the sixth when they batted around, four Dawson walks and singles by Pohlen and Nuy to scored six runs to put the game away. On the mound, Nuy struggled, but got through until Dawson rallied for three in the seventh.

Austin DeVlaeminck came in to fan the final batter and preserve the win for Minneota.
